The Backstory Behind Super Troopers' Hilarious Biker Scene
Cult classic comedies don't get much more beloved than Super Troopers, as the story of the delightfully quirky Vermont State troopers has become a staple of the genre in the two decades since it first debuted. Now, with Super Troopers 2 officially in theaters, the Broken Lizard comedy troupe has looked back on some of the classic moments from the original to provide some much-needed insight. In fact, during a recent AMA session, the crew opened up and admitted that the "bikers" mix-up joke stemmed from an actual on-set costume mix-up. One member of Broken Lizard wrote:
So, despite seeming like an incredibly smart play on words, the classic "Oooooh biker!" line from Super Troopers actually stemmed from an on-set mix-up with the wardrobe department. The nature of the biker outfits for the scene between Foster (Paul Soter) and Ursula (Marisa Coughlan) was never made clear, so multiple versions of the costume were brought to set when the time came to start shooting.
That version of events remains relatively consistent with other accounts of how the biker joke came into existence. In fact, elsewhere in the Broken Lizard Reddit AMA session, another member of the comedy ensemble chimed in and explained how the mix-up led to a lightbulb moment in which the joke became clear to them. He wrote:
Of course, those of you who haven't seen the original Super Troopers (or those of you who have, but specifically want a refresher course on the scene) can check out the awesome joke in the following clip.
