The Hilarious Taylor Swift Nod Ryan Reynolds Works Into Deadpool 2
While some critics may fear superhero fatigue, there is one comic book property who is breaking all the rules: Deadpool. The fourth wall breaking antihero defied expectations when the first film arrived in 2016, and its sequel is just a matter of days away. Early reception for Deadpool 2 is overwhelmingly positive, although most of us fans will have to wait for the highly anticipated blockbuster to arrive in theaters. But some information can be gleaned from the trailers, and one of the most recent ones actually contains a hilarious reference to none other than Taylor Swift. While inside the X-Mansion, Wade Wilson rocks a t-shirt with two cats on it, and the names "Meredith and Olivia". Those just happen to be the names of Taylor's two feline friends. Check it out below.
While a little hard to see when slowed down, you can make out the absolutely ridiculous shirt that Deadpool 2's protagonist is rocking in the trailer. The pink center of the garment features two cats that look remarkably like Taylor Swift's real life famous cats. Deadpool is a franchise that features very specific pop culture references, and it looks like Ryan Reynolds cherished the opportunity to go ham on on the T. Swift details. Swift is just about the most famous person in the world, and her reach certainly includes her cats Meredith and Olivia. Plus the cats' names are pop culture references themselves, adding an extra layer to the joke.
Taylor Swift is a self proclaimed lover of TV, and she named each of her cats for famous small screen badasses. One is named Olivia Benson, Mariska Hargitay's signature character from Law & Order: SVU. While Swift might have fame and fortune that most of us can't imagine, she loves a good procedural as much as the rest of us. Meanwhile, her other Kitty is named Meredith Grey, after the protagonist of long running medical drama Grey's Anatomy. You can check out a photo of them below, as Swift is wont to share.
With Wade Wilson wearing a Taylor Swift kitten t-shirt in Deadpool 2, one can only imagine how the pop singer factors into the sequel. This costume choice isn't going to go unnoticed, and a pink shirt with famous cats just lends itself to one of the character's fourth wall breaking moments. And luckily, we won't have to wait too long to find out how it all shakes down.
The pop culture references will be revealed when Deadpool 2 hits theaters May 18, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
