It's easy to wonder just how much an actor is like the various roles they play. Thanks to the internet, it isn't so hard to get an idea of who a celebrity is as a person (assuming they are the one writing those Twitter posts) but any actor who passed away before the internet boom is a different story. So, in this particular case, what was John Candy like? Of all his roles, was he more like the wonderfully annoying salesman from Planes, Trains, & Automobiles or the dog man from Spaceballs? According to his daughter, he was closest in personality to Uncle Buck.
For those who may not know, John Candy was a famous comedian and actor from the 80s and early 90s. He was known for his supporting and leading roles in films like The Great Outdoors, Spaceballs, Splash, Cool Runnings, and Planes, Trains, & Automobiles. One of his best films was the John Hughes directed Uncle Buck, which told the story of the slobbish but kind-hearted screw-up Buck Russell, who must babysit his nieces and nephew over the course of several days. It's a great John Hughes movie and the character of Buck is apparently not too far off from what John Candy was actually like.
Jennifer Candy, the daughter of John Candy, told the Canadian Press that she always describes her father as being closest to his character in Uncle Buck. He wasn't too far off to the characters he played -- to the relief of many of his fans -- but Buck is the one that stuck the closest to home. Candy was a fan of tough love but also liked to have fun, with Jennifer Candy citing the example that he liked to prank call his friends in silly voices.
Please enjoy this clip from Uncle Buck, in which John Candy demonstrates that he is both fun and stern.
