WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War! But I mean, come on, you've seen it right?
In the 10 year history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there has arguably never been a character teed up better to make a huge splash in their debut than Captain Marvel. The post-credits scene to Avengers: Infinity War essentially positioned her as the potential savior to a group of heroes and a universe that just suffered an incalculable defeat. So needless to say, fans are very excited to see Brie Larson in Captain Marvel next year. But Carol Danvers isn't the only Marvel hero sporting the Marvel name, and we now know that Captain Marvel will pave the way for the eventual introduction of Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan. Marvel studios head honcho Kevin Feige heralded her coming in the video below.
Wow, that is a pretty big revelation and kind of unexpected. Marvel tends to want to publicly focus on what's coming in the near future and not tip their hand too much about what's in the works long term. Yet in this Twitter video, Kevin Feige outright says that Ms. Marvel is definitely in the works and that, naturally, Captain Marvel allows for the introduction of that character. The current chapter of the MCU is ending, with heroes presumably leaving in one way or another in Avengers 4. As such, it only makes sense that more heroes would be on deck to take their place and it sounds like ladies sporting the Marvel name will be a sizable part of that.
For those unfamiliar, or those just wondering exactly how many heroes sport the name Marvel, it's a complicated situation. While the Marvel name has a convoluted history across multiple comic book universes and Carol Danvers herself was also once Ms. Marvel, the Kamala Khan version is much more straightforward. The Kamala Khan Ms. Marvel debuted in 2013, and she has quickly become a fan favorite in the years since.
Kamala Khan is a Muslim Pakistani-American immigrant who is a huge fan of the Avengers and particularly, Carol Danvers. She actually carries the Inhuman gene and undergoes Terrigenesis (although who knows if she'll still be an Inhuman in the MCU at this point). When she emerges she is a polymorph, able to stretch and manipulate her body in any way she needs. She can even fully shapeshift and she has some healing abilities. Kamala Khan takes up the Ms. Marvel name in honor of her favorite hero.
A few years back it seemed like a Ms. Marvel TV series might be in the works but it never came to fruition. And while I suppose that Kamala Khan showing up on a TV show is still possible, my guess is that she'll be in the proper cinematic universe in some way. The timing is perfect to start working towards Ms. Marvel, too. Captain Marvel is on the way and Black Panther just showed Marvel and Disney how lucrative on screen representation can be. Ms. Marvel has that same potential by giving a group that rarely sees themselves on screen in positive roles, a superhero to root for.
Before fans can get Kamala Khan, we get to see who she idolizes. Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, 2019.
