What Happened To Aunt May, Lady Sif And More Marvel Side Characters During Avengers: Infinity War

Lady Sif in Thor The Dark World

SPOILER WARNING: Major spoilers for the ending of Avengers: Infinity War. It's been out for three weeks now, but this is still a pretty big spoiler.

The ending of Avengers: Infinity War is brutal, surprising, and pretty ballsy. Thanos accomplishes his mission to wipe out half the universe with a snap of his fingers, with several beloved characters turning to ash right there on the big screen. Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, and almost all of the Guardians of the Galaxy all bite it, but it's a big universe and fans can't help but wonder which MCU characters didn't turn to dust in the Snappening. Thankfully, the Russo Brothers are speaking out after the release of the movie, and they recently revealed the fates of Lady Sif, Howard the Duck, Betty Ross, Aunt May, and, uh, Matt Damon's Asgardian actor.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Joe and Anthony Russo discussed which MCU side characters survived or perished at Thanos' universe wiping snap in the massively successful blockbuster. The two didn't offer much more than a yes or no, but it's hard to be more clear than that. Of the characters discussed, the Russos revealed that Aunt May and Howard the Duck are the only two who lived. While Howard is likely still fine slumming it at skeezy alien bars, Aunt May's fate is actually really depressing. Peter Parker memorably didn't survive, which means that May has lost both Peter and Uncle Ben. Tony Stark will have to be the one to tell her, but we'll see if that ends up on screen or not in Avengers 4.

As for the characters who didn't make it out alive, Lady Sif, Betty Ross, and the Asgardian who played Loki in a stage play in Thor: Ragnarok all died. Lady Sif has been MIA ever since Thor: The Dark World, with barely a mention given to her in Ragnarok, so it's not too surprising that Marvel would take her off the board entirely here. Betty Ross, who hasn't been seen or mentioned at all since The Incredible Hulk, may have well as been dead this entire time. Matt Damon's Ragnarok cameo technically could have either died when Thanos invaded the Asgardian ship or from the snap (it's been tough to be an Asgardian lately), but he wouldn't be gracing the stage anytime soon.

There are a few characters that the Russos weren't at liberty to disclose, those characters being Ned Leeds, Shuri, Korg and Miek, and Jane Foster. They claimed they couldn't give these away because of "spoilers," which I don't think necessarily means there is something planned for each character in Avengers 4, but they clearly want to keep fans invested. Korg and Miek better be okay, y'all!

You may not be able to see any of these characters in the movie, but you can see a whole lot other characters in Avengers: Infinity War, in theaters right now.
