SPOILER WARNING: This article contains spoilers for a really fun cameo in Deadpool 2. Come back after you've seen the movie!
The summer movie season is officially kicking off into high gear with the first major release in May: Deadpool 2. The sequel is already breaking opening day records and is on track to have the highest grossing weekend for an R-rated movie ever. It also helps that the movie is pretty funny. Now with some extra clout, Deadpool 2 is bigger than the last film and contains a few surprise cameos from high-level celebrities and even some superheroes. Most surprising, the X-Men finally show up for a cameo in Deadpool 2, though it turns out that none of the X-Men actors were actually on the set with Ryan Reynolds. Cinemablend had a chance to speak with the writers of Deadpool 2 and they explained...
Despite the fact that Deadpool takes place in the X-Men franchise, the Merc with a Mouth has never actually met any of the members of the main team. Every time he visits the X-Mansion, there's never anyone else there other than Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. Deadpool being Deadpool, he usually points out that the studio isn't willing to shell out the big bucks to get Jame McAvoy on set. Deadpool 2 reprises this joke but capitalizes on it in a really fun way by showing Beast, Cyclops, Storm, Nightcrawler, Quicksilver, and Professor X for all of five seconds. The group is having a meeting in another room and quickly close the door before a nearby complaining Deadpool can notice them.
CineaBlend's own Eric Eisenberg spoke to writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick about the cameo and the duo revealed how it came together. Those were all the real actors who play the X-Men, but none of them appeared in person on the Deadpool 2 set. Their cameo was actually filmed in front of a green screen by Simon Kinberg during the shooting of the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Then they were added to Deadpool 2 using the magic of special effects.
Overall, it's a super fun cameo and a smart way to get the X-Men in there without actually having to bring them to the set. We don't totally know where Deadpool will show up next, be it an X-Force movie or Deadpool 3, but maybe he can finally get a cameo all his own in an X-Men movie.
You can (briefly) see the X-Men in Deadpool 2, which is out in theaters right now.
