It was always the plan for Gal Gadot to reprise Wonder Woman in Justice League following the Amazon heroine's solo movie, but with Wonder Woman proving itself to be a critical and commercial hit in the summer of 2017, DC and Warner Bros understandably moved forward to a sequel. Even before Wonder Woman 2 was officially given the green light, it was reported that rather than take place after Diana of Themyscira's adventure with Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Flash and Cyborg, it would be another prequel story, this time with the action taking place in the 1980s. That was later confirmed, and now DC president Geoff Johns has seemingly pinpointed the exact year with the below picture.
1984, the year that George Orwell's eponymous novel took its title from, and which included major events like Sally Ride being the first woman to go into space and Ghostbusters hitting theaters. This also places Wonder Woman 2 as taking place 67 years after Wonder Woman, when Diana first ventured into man's world and tried to bring an early end to World War I. What's unclear from this picture is if Wonder Woman 2 will actually be called Wonder Woman 1984 or if this just served as a fun tease. Regardless, I like that the low quality, VHS-like lines in the lettering to make it look era appropriate.
While no specific Wonder Woman 2 plot details have been revealed yet, the sequel will see Diana fighting The Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig. Game of Thrones's Pedro Pascal has also been cast in a key role. Unofficially, it's been rumored that only will Wonder Woman clash with Soviet Union forces during Wonder Woman 2, but Chris Pine will also be back. The former plot point makes since given that the Soviet Union was on its last legs during this period, but as for Pine, his character, Steve Trevor, sacrificed himself in Wonder Woman to destroy Doctor Poison's deadly gas. Granted, in comic books death isn't quite as permanent with notable characters, but even if we assume that Steve was somehow miraculously transported off that plane before it exploded, he would have died from old age before 1984. Perhaps Steve is simply appearing through flashbacks or as a hallucination, but for now, all that's guaranteed is that the DC Amazon will do battle with a ferocious cat lady.
