Jeremy Renner Still Shot His Avengers 4 Bow Scenes After Breaking His Arms
Last year, actor Jeremy Renner broke both of his arms while filming a movie. Contrary to what you might expect, the injury did not occur on the set of the Avengers movies while Renner's character was battling Thanos in some grand set piece. No, it happened while filming the comedy Tag. This left the actor in a less-than-ideal position with two broken arms while still working on movies, including playing the archer Hawkeye in Avengers 4, which filmed right after Tag. It turns out that arms are pretty essential to archery and archery is essential to Hawkeye. So, Jeremy Renner toughed it out and shot his Avengers 4 bow scenes with two broken arms. The actor explained his mentality while doing this, saying:
Jeremy Renner truly is the Hawkeye we need and deserve. He's also making a pretty good case that he belongs in the conversation with Tom Cruise for the award for Hollywood's toughest actor. Jeremy Renner seems to have a really good mentality about the whole thing by not feeling sorry for himself that he was in the predicament in the first place. He also didn't want to let everyone else down on the huge Avengers 4 production by not using the bow and arrow that are essential to the Hawkeye character. Hawkeye is expected to have a much more significant role in Avengers 4 (hard not to) and with a limited Jeremy Renner that could have forced changes or made for a difficult production. Fortunately, Jeremy Renner is a superhero. As to how he made it work and toughed it out, Jeremy Renner also told Entertainment Weekly:
You've got to respect the professionalism and just how much of a badass Jeremy Renner is in real life. Physical therapy can be a painful experience after a serious injury and to have to continue to work with both arms, while filming a movie that requires you to use them in what I'm guessing is a strenuous way, is likely quite the task. It's also probably pretty exhausting and gives you little time to rest if you're doing therapy everyday and working long days on set, as well. Thankfully, Jeremy Renner was up to working, living up to the toughness of his character that holds his own amongst gods.
Not to infer too much, but we have speculated about Hawkeye possibly becoming Ronin in Avengers 4, but unless he's not being truthful here, this tells us that Hawkeye will be using his trademark bow and arrow at some point. Other than that, Clint Barton's story in Avengers 4 is largely a mystery. The Russo Brothers have teased that he will get his due and have a very specific story in the next film, so it is cool to know that Jeremy Renner's injury didn't ruin that and we will get to see this original Avenger loosing arrows at all comers.
You can hopefully, finally, see Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye finding his mark and putting Katniss Everdeen to shame when Avengers 4 hits theaters on May 3, 2019. Check out our guide for all of the upcoming movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
