DC Staff Have Seen Aquaman, Here's What They Think
Last year was a mixed one for the DC Extended Universe; while Wonder Woman proved to be a critical and commercial success, Justice League was met with mixed reviews and ultimately fell flat at the box office. But the DCEU is still chugging along, and this December will see the release of Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa, who's already played the eponymous character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Other than a few stills, the public hasn't seen anything of Aquaman yet, but a cut of the movie has already been shown to notable individuals over at DC Entertainment and Warner Bros, and they're impressed with what they've seen. Geoff Johns, who co-wrote Aquaman's story, had this to say:
Among Geoff Johns' many writing credits was penning the Aquaman book at the start of the New 52 reboot, and he also worked on the character during the Brightest Day event and his Justice League run. So obviously he's well-versed with Arthur Curry, and hearing that he's impressed with what director James Wan has accomplished ideally bodes well. Meanwhile, Warner Bros film chief Toby Emmerich commended Wan and his team for doing an "incredible job" with imagining the underwater world. Then there's Peter Safran, one of the Aquaman producers, who said the following:
Along with passing along the praise from the above DC brass, EW reported that Aquaman is said to be "visually more punchy and with more humor" compared to some of the Zack Snyder-directed DCEU movies. It's worth remembering that because these people work for DC/Warner Bros, it's doubtful you'd hear them outright criticizing Aquaman ahead of time, as they don't want to steer moviegoers away from checking it out this winter. Nevertheless, between the talented cast assembled and much of the story taking place underwater, a realm that hasn't been deeply (pun intended) explored in other superhero movies, Aquaman sounds like it will be a unique blockbuster. And with James Wan overseeing the movie, fingers crossed that he does justice to a character who's been an important player in the DC Comics landscape for decades.
Aquaman dives into theaters on December 21, but fans in the United Kingdom will get to see it a week earlier. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for all the biggest updates concerning the DCEU, and feel free to look through our DC movies guide to learn what other projects this franchise has in development.
