Wonder Woman 1984 Just Added An HBO Favorite
DC's film world is still being developed, as the studio attempts to craft a shared universe as consistent and successful as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And while there are plenty of DC fans out there, the only critical success to arrive in theaters so far is Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman. As such, anticipation for its upcoming sequel has been at a fever pitch since the first film completed its theatrical run. Wonder Woman 1984 will bring Diana Prince into another decade, while Chris Pine returns in some capacity as Steve Trevor-- despite his apparent death. While most of the characters are a mystery, one star of HBO's Insecure has just joined the cast: actress Natasha Rothwell.
Natasha Rothwell is one of the few Wonder Woman 1984 actors announced (via Deadline) thus far, although her role is still currently a mystery. She'll be joining franchise stars Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, who play Diana Prince and Steve Trevor respectively. Also joining the cast is Kristin Wiig's villainous Barbara Minerva/Cheetah, as well as Game of Thrones alum Pedro Pascal. The latter's character is also a mystery, so it's clear that DC is keeping its cards close to the chest for Wonder Woman 1984.
Natasha Rothwell is perhaps best known for her role in HBO's comedy Insecure, playing Issa's friend Kelli during the show's run. Rothwell was promoted to a series regular in the show's sophomore season, after being a recurring player for Season 1 on HBO. She's also known for playing drama teacher Ms. Albright in the recent coming of age drama Love, Simon.
Wonder Woman 1984 is largely a mystery, but DC fans are eager for any information about Patty Jenkins' highly anticipated sequel. The upcoming blockbuster will move the narrative forward a few decades, revealing yet another adventure Dian Prince had before she entered the scene in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The character referenced fighting in Man's wars before, and has already lost the person closest to her during the end of Wonder Woman. While it's unclear how Steve Trevor will once again factor into the narrative, the first images feature the couple together, apparently ageless, and rocking some sweet fanny packs.
There will no doubt be plenty of new characters in addition to Natasha Rothwell's role, fans are eager to see which Wonder Woman stars will be returning for the sequel. Given the massive time jump, keeping the main cast together seems nearly impossible. Connie Nielsen will likely return as Queen Hippolyta, as the mother/daughter relationship shared with Diana is one of the franchise's most fascinating plot points. Many fans are also hoping that Lucy David could return as Steve's secretary Etta Candy. although she might have to be an old lady a la Peggy Carter in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Sure, she'd be like 100 years old, but Etta has the plucky attitude to have such a long life.
All will be revealed when Wonder Woman 1984 arrives in theaters on November 1st, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
