Venom's Success Rate At The Box Office Is Outperforming Logan At Same Point
Venom may not have been well received by the critics, but on the commercial side of things, the symbiote-powered movie is doing quite well for itself. It emerged as the big winner during its opening weekend, financially overshadowing the more critically-lauded A Star is Born, and Venom is expected to continue performing strongly in its second weekend. In fact, it's apparently having a better rate of success than Logan had during the same amount of time.
For its opening bow, Venom brought in a little over $80 million domestically, and currently it sits at a domestic total of $107.1 million. As Forbes explains, that's a 1.33x multiplier for Venom's first week, whereas in its first week, Logan, Hugh Jackman's final outing as Wolverine, had a 1.29x multiplier, starting out with $88 million opening weekend and reached $114 million after its first week. Logan went on to collect $154 million at the ten day mark, while Venom's estimated to reach around $139 million at that same mark.
So while numbers-wise Logan is ahead, in terms of performance, Venom is faring slightly better. Will this hold or even increase, ultimately leading Venom to surpass Logan when all is said and done? That's hard to say. Logan ended its domestic run with over $226 million, while Venom is predicted to wrap things up with over $200 million. So working strictly off those numbers, it's not looking good.
However, one advantage Venom has is international audiences. As of today, Venom has collected $127.1 million at the foreign box office, adding up to a $234.2 million total. To be fair, Logan was no slouch overseas, making $392.7 million and, when added to the domestic total, ended with $619 million. But Venom has yet to open in China, one of the world's biggest movie markets, so that could turn the tables in its favor.
It also helps that Venom is the only fantasy-oriented PG-13 blockbuster for the coming weeks, holding down the fort until Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald works its magic. Sure the release of Halloween next week might steal some of Venom's audience away, but it's probably not going to be too much of an inconvenience.
Wherever Venom's box office total ends up being and how that compares to Logan's, one thing is clear: you can bet the Sony bigwigs are talking seriously about green lighting a sequel. The Venom mid-credits scene certainly laid the groundwork for it, so perhaps we'll hear news about Venom 2 before the year is up. Venom's commercial performance also bodes well for Sony's wider franchise of Spider-Man characters, with Morbius shooting next.
