It's been two years since Doctor Strange was released in theaters, and Marvel Studios has yet to confirm when a sequel will hit theaters. However, we have assumed the movie is in the works. Due to the secretive nature of Phase 4, Marvel has only confirmed a small handful of titles, and many have assumed that Doctor Strange 2 was on the table. Benedict Wong, who starred as Wong in the film, has offered a cool little update on the project at Fan Expo Vancouver, and he hopes to begin filming by the end of this year.
At a recent appearance at Fan Expo Vancouver, Benedict Wong told a crowd of fans that he couldn't weigh in on whether Wong survived The Snap or not in Avengers: Infinity War, but he could reveal that he was involved in Avengers 4. Whether that's in flashback capacity or not is anyone's guess, but Wong did drop an interesting nugget that he was hoping to begin filming Doctor Strange 2 by the end of the year. That might be the most solid confirmation yet about when Doctor Strange 2 will be hitting theaters.
Doctor Strange received positive reviews and made over $670 million worldwide, which is pretty good for a Marvel origin film. Due to its positive reception, people have been waiting for Doctor Strange 2 to be announced, but it looks like Marvel is still keeping that news close to the chest. Part of the reason for this is likely to keep fans in the dark for what happens after Avengers 4. After all, announcing Doctor Strange 2 is a spoiler as to what happens to that character.
That's not to say that Marvel hasn't given the green light to other sequels. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and just recently Black Panther 2 were all confirmed, so why no Strange 2? This writer's theory is that Marvel has been developing Doctor Strange 2 all this time, but the company is just keeping it on the down low until Avengers 4 is out. You gotta parcel that news out. Besides, Director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill have both previously teased the sequel. Marvel's own Kevin Feige said the sequel was happening, but there's no solid window of release.
Regardless of when it happens, fans will likely be happy when Doctor Strange 2 comes to theaters. The character was straight up awesome in Infinity War, and while we don't know if he's in Avengers 4 (fingers crossed!), there's hopefully a lot of exciting stuff brewing for this wizard.
Whether Wong and Doctor Strange are in it or not, Avengers 4 is set to arrive in theaters on May 4, 2019. To learn more, be sure to check out what we know so far about the film. For everything else Marvel has coming, take a look at our Marvel movie release guide.
