How Much Captain Marvel Could Make Opening Weekend
It's a fascinating time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the events of Avengers: Infinity War are still being felt by moviegoers. Thanos succeeded in his quest, wiping out half the galaxy with the snap of his finger. While all seemed loss, Nick Fury was able to send a distress message to one Captain Marvel before he turned to dust.
Carol Danvers will finally answer enter the MCU with Captain Marvel, serving as an origin story for the titular character. Set in the 1990's, moviegoers will see Carol interact with younger version of Nick Fury and Phil Coulson, as well as cosmic characters Ronan and Korath. The anticipation for Captain Marvel has been at a fever pitch, and the latest estimation for its box office performance is coming in at a whopping $140 million.
This prediction comes to us from Box Office Pro, which has Captain Marvel making a small fortune for its opening weekend. If and when the money starts rolling in, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's upcoming blockbuster will barrel past major March releases of the past. This includes Beauty and the Beast, The Hunger Games, and DC's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. The latter is particularly fascinating, as BvS had more star power and iconic characters than Captain Marvel.
But there's no denying the Marvel machine, with loyal moviegoers willing to shell out money and see each new installment in theaters. Phase Three of the MCU has gone on largely without a hitch, as every single blockbuster has been a critical and box office success. And given the timing of Captain Marvel's release and the upcoming phase-concluding Endgame, Marvel fans are ravenous for new content.
After the horrifying events of The Decimation, Avengers: Infinity War left us with just one more tag. Nick Fury uses a mysterious pager to contact Captain Marvel, after watching Maria Hill fade to dust before his eyes. He manages to herald Brie Larson's superheroic character, just before he also succumbed to the Infinity Stones' power. Carol Danvers is presumably on her way, with moviegoers eager to meet her in the upcoming solo flick.
Captain Marvel will presumably have a meaty role in Avengers: Endgame, considering how few heroes were left standing at the end of Infinity War. Carol Danvers has been teased to have massive powers, possibly even including Time Travel. This could serve as a macguffin to get the Avengers traveling through the multi-verse. Alternatively, fans are hoping to watch Captain Marvel lay the smack down on Thanos, and serve the Mad Titan up some humble pie.
But before that we'll have to meet Carol Danvers, and watch as she attempts to navigate her own memories. And all while interacting with some of Marvel's favorites.
