Could The New Mutants Actually End Up On Hulu?
Before shared universes and serialized storytelling became commonplace, the X-Men franchise was proving that comic book movies could make a profit in theaters. The franchise is still going strong with the Deadpool franchise, as well as upcoming installments Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants. The latter is a highly anticipated spinoff that has been teased as a horror comic book movie, although it's been delayed a number of times by the studio.
At the time of writing, The New Mutants is set to arrive in theaters on August 2, 2019. But there hasn't been any hopeful updates coming from production, and rumors have begun swirling regarding the movie's ultimate fate. A new report indicated that it may be pushed back again, and that Josh Boone's upcoming superhero movie might actually end up on a streaming service like Hulu.
This newest rumors comes to us from Twitter, so it's far from confirmed. But with so little information coming from the studio regarding New Mutants' reshoots and editing process, it's unclear what is coming next. And with the looming merger between Disney and 20th Century Fox making everything all the more complicated, the fate of the larger X-Men franchise is also unclear.
The New Mutants was filmed back in 2017, with the movie originally aiming for a release in April 2018. But it was ultimately delayed more than once, with reshoots reportedly focused on the film's elements of horror. Fans are hoping the movie will deliver on scares, so reshoots sounded like a wise plan for the mysterious project.
But there hasn't been any news, footage, or images in the recent past, so fans have no idea how The New Mutants is faring. If the movie fails to find its tone and deliver with test audiences, perhaps it could end up pivoting to a streaming service like Hulu or Netflix. We've seen this with projects like The Cloverfield Paradox, and it could help give the project some extra publicity.
Of course, reshoots are also expensive. As such, the studio likely wants The New Mutants in theaters, to hopefully make a ton of money at the box office. 20th Century Fox has the wild success of Deadpool, but X-Men: Apocalypse didn't fare nearly as well. The New Mutants offers the chance for something new and innovating with the mutant world, but its delays have cause concern with the fandom.
The New Mutants is set within a secret facility, where the superpowered teenagers are being held in captive. There's a strong young cast attached, including Game of Thrones favorite Maisie Williams, Glass' Anya Taylor-Joy, and Stranger Things' Charlie Heaton. The internet seemed to really respond to the film's first trailer, although the updates quickly stopped there.
