2019 is looking to be a huge year for blockbusters, with movies like Captain Marvel and Star Wars: Episode IX, but Hollywood has already got its sights set on 2020. Studios are getting their ducks in a row and have laid claim to some prime summer territory. Not only will moviegoers get Christopher Nolan's next movie in July 2020, but it will be accompanied by Ghostbusters 3 and Sony's Morbius.
Christopher Nolan, the prolific filmmaker behind such hits like The Dark Knight, Memento, and Prestige, is back with another movie in 2020. The director's last film was the WWII drama Dunkirk, which earned Nolan his first ever Best Director nomination. Nolan is following that film with a new project, but in Nolan tradition, it's highly secretive.
Hollywood Reporter has the scoop and they report that Christopher Nolan has lined up his next "event film" with Warner Bros., and it will open in IMAX on July 17, 2020. The project is highly secretive, but Nolan is the kind of guy who can get A-list actors and studios on just his name alone, so the plot isn't too important at this stage.
Christopher Nolan movies seem to favor a July release. Four of his last five movies have all opened in mid-July and it looks like it'll be a highly competitive month next year. Not only do you have Disney's Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne Johnson, a new Spongebob movie, and a Bob's Burgers movie arriving that month, but Morbius and the surprise Ghostbusters 3 are both shooting for July.
Ghostbusters 3, which will be a continuation of the original Ghostbusters films, has been slated for a release date of July 20, 2020. The new film will be directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman. There's been no word on if any of the original cast such as Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray will appear in the film.
Three weeks later on July 31, 2020, the Spider-Man spinoff Morbius will hit theaters. The film is Sony's next in a series of movies that star Spider-Man supporting characters, like last years surprise hit Venom. Morbius follows Michael Morbius, a scientist who accidentally transforms himself into a vampire. Jared Leto is set to star and Matt Smith recently joined the cast in an unspecified role.
That's a pretty stacked July! Christopher Nolan is no stranger to blockbusters, but I'm curious if his project has any audience overlap with Ghostbusters 3 or Morbius. My guess is no, but he's a high-profile director and any film of his is bound to get attention from most moviegoers.
