Samuel L. Jackson Talks Captain Marvel’s Time Traveling Abilities
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is coming to the edge of a precipice, as there are just two movies left in the franchise's massively popular Phase Three. Years after the casting was announced, Brie Larson will finally make her Marvel debut as Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel-- set to arrive in theaters in a matter of weeks. The title character has been teased as the most powerful hero in the MCU thus far, with wild powers reportedly including time travel.
News of Captain Marvel's time traveling abilities was revealed due to Samuel L. Jackson who has been getting a bit chatty about the blockbuster ahead of its release. Carol Danvers' ability to travel through time may have a major affect on Avengers: Endgame, so fans are eager for any and all information about that particular superpower. Now Jackson has once again teased her powers, saying:
Oops, he did it again. It seems that we should expect Carol Danvers to do plenty of time traveling, especially as it relates to her eventual appearance in Avengers: Endgame. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait for both that and Captain Marvel to arrive in theaters before the public can fully understand Sam Jackson's statements.
Samuel L. Jackson's comments come to us from Total Film Magazine (via CBM), and tease that Nick Fury's mysterious beeper from the Infinity War mid-credits scene would be addressed in the near future. Nick Fury heralding Captain Marvel was the final shot of Avengers: Infinity War, revealing that the cycloptic Marvel hero has a history with superpowered folks long before he showed up in Iron Man to recruit Tony for The Avengers.
This latest update shows that Carol Danvers' time traveling abilities may give her the chance to move both forward and back in time. Furthermore, he seems to think that the pager might have gotten to Fury's hands through that ability, rather than the main story of Captain Marvel. All that remains to be seen, as Marvel studios has been keeping its cards close to the chest ahead of the next two releases.
Time travel is a common fan theory for Avengers: Endgame, possibly providing a way for the surviving heroes to reverse Thanos' finger snap of death (aka The Decimation). While many assumed this would be done through Scott Lang and his access to the mysterious Quantum Realm, Captain Marvel may also be able to go through space and time herself, further opening up the narrative possibilities for Endgame.
Fans have been waiting for Captain Marvel to pop up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years, especially once Brie Larson was announced for the role over 3 years ago. But the Captain Marvel movie is ultimately the penultimate installment in Phase Three, so moviegoers have had to patiently wait until the first glimpse of Carol arrived.

Luckily that wait is almost over, and the first footage from Captain Marvel has arrived ahead of the film’s release. The blockbuster is going to split its runtime between space and Earth, as Carol Danvers’ fractured memory is explained, while we see just how powerful Captain Marvel truly is.
In addition to serving as an origin story, Captain Marvel will also help to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially as its related to S.H.I.E.L.D. favorites like Nick Fury and Phil Coulson. We’ll meet younger version of the characters, digitally de-aged with cutting edge visual effects.
Once Captain Marvel is in the rear interview, it should be fascinating to see how Brie Larson’s character factors into the narrative of Avengers: Endgame. Carol Danvers has been noticeably absent from the first trailers, with some fans theorizing she’s actually been edited out of the footage in order to keep her entrance exciting.
But with so many Avengers and Guardians having faded to dust after Thanos’ victory in Infinity War, the surviving heroes are going to need all the help they can get if they intend on battling Thanos and reversing the effects of The Snap.
Fans have been excited to see Captain Marvel throw down with Thanos, and serve the Mad Titan up some humble pie. Avengers: Infinity War saw Josh Brolin’s villain quickly dispatch of The Hulk, and go toe to toe with multiple heroes during the battle on Titan. But given just how powerful Captain Marvel is, she sounds like the perfect hero to even the odds in Endgame.
Carol Danver’s reported time travel powers presumably make her role all the more important, possibly providing the surviving Avengers with the hope to keep fighting. Another popular theory is that Captain Marvel will rescue Tony Stark and Nebula, who are currently stranded in space after losing the battle on Titan. Since Nick Fury signaled for her as he faded to dust, the timing might work out to allow Carol Danvers to start her Endgame appearance meeting Iron Man, and bringing him home.
We’ll likely get more of an idea about Captain Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame after her origin story finally arrives in theaters. Marvel Studios have been very particular about when it reveals new information to the fandom, allowing each blockbuster to stand on its own in the shared universe. Just look at how long it took for Avengers: Endgame to get its official title.
Luckily for the rabid Marvel fanbase, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. Captain Marvel will arrive next month, and Avengers: Endgame will follow up shortly thereafter. This means that Marvel Studios will also explain the roadmap for Phase Four, which is being kept under wraps in order to avoid Endgame spoilers.
Captain Marvel will arrive in theaters on March 8th, and Avengers: Endgame will follow suit on April 26th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
