The movie summer season is officially here and there will be no shortage of entertainment in the coming months. Obviously, Avengers: Endgame is the pop culture event of the moment, but there's another superhero film coming out soon and it's even produced by a Marvel veteran. Brightburn is produced by James Gunn, and while the movie has lots of competition, Gunn feels it's a great way to spend Memorial Day. What could be better than an evil psycho Superman?
While James Gunn is best known as the writer and director behind the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, the filmmaker has an all-new superhero movie featuring an original character coming to theaters. Brightburn is a Gunn family affair. Gunn's brother Brian and and cousin Mark Gunn wrote the script for the film.
Brightburn tells the story of a couple who adopt an alien baby who crash lands to Earth. However, when the troubled child begins to develop incredible powers, he doesn't exactly decide to use them for good.
If that sounds exactly like Superman but evil, well, that's because it is! The movie wears that inspiration on its sleeve to tell an alternate horror-based take on the iconic superhero. It's not a very complicated concept but it's fun, and when played for scares it could be a really entertaining way to spend the day.
James Gunn feels much the same way. He told Entertainment Weekly that Brightburn would make for a great time at the movies.
Summer movies are all about fun and entertainment, and Brightburn sounds like it fits that bill. The ultimate judgement will happen when the movie arrives in theaters, but thankfully we don't have to wait that long to find out for sure.
Speaking on the subject of James Gunn, the director has some other high-profile superhero projects to look forward to. The filmmaker is writing and directing a reboot of Suicide Squad called The Suicide Squad, which is slated to arrive in theaters on August 6, 2021. After that, Gunn returns to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The film doesn't have a release dat yet, but Marvel is sure to make an announcement concerning that soon enough.
