Allegedly, Henry Cavill Would Still Play Superman Under One Condition
Henry Cavill launched DC's modern crop of big screen superhero movies with Man of Steel, but following Justice League, the future of the big blue boy scout is very much in question. While Superman is the most popular superhero ever, there are reportedly no plans for another Superman movie at this point, which means there are no plans for Henry Cavill to reprise the role.
However, Cavill is apparently still very much interested in playing Superman again. A Youtuber on Twitter claims to have run into the actor during the recent San Diego Comic-Con and spoken with him at length about a number of topics, including Superman. According to him, Cavill said that he was interested in continuing as Superman, and was interested in a movie designed to "explore how it effects someone with absolute power."
While a selfie with Cavill confirms that the two did meet, without an additional source of confirmation we'd still have to call this one a rumor. Still, it's an enticing one. The future of Superman might be in doubt, but certainly the fact that Henry Cavill is interested in continuing with the role is an important piece of the puzzle. If we knew for certain Cavill was done playing Superman, then we would have an idea what direction the character would go from here, likely some sort of reboot.
Things are far from clear when it comes to the future of Superman. Reports several months ago claimed Cavill was done with the role, following an inability to come to an agreement on a Superman cameo in the recent Shazam! Superman did appear in the film's final scene, but it was not Cavill wearing the suit.
However, additional reporting claimed that the main reason Cavill isn't currently signed to play the Man of Steel again is because nobody is. There are simply no current plans for the character within the DC film universe. It's an odd state of affairs considering that, while Batman has been the more successful character on the big screen, Superman is still the character with the widest name recognition around the world.
If Cavill is still interested, it certainly makes sense to go to him first if and when those plans change.
Otherwise, we could see a reboot of Superman along the lines of what we appear to be seeing with Batman. While the exact situation is unclear, with Robert Pattinson taking on the role of the Caped Crusader we're getting either a reboot of the character within the DC film universe, a prequel story, or a stand alone movie not connected to the larger continuity.

DC's movies appear to have been laid out for the next few years, so it doesn't look like we'll be getting a Man of Steel 2 anytime soon, though we might still get one eventually. Henry Cavill will certainly be keeping busy regardless. He'll be starring in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of The Witcher.
