Structurally and quality-wise, the DCEU has been somewhat of a mixed bag-- with Geoff Johns's departure being a devastating blow to DC's original plans. While there have been some really great entries in the franchise (Wonder Woman and Shazam! being two of its best), many of its attempts at bringing DC characters to life have been horribly executed.
But there are some characters and concepts that have amazing potential, the Rock's Black Adam being chief among them. He's set to star in the yet-to-be-released Black Adam film, which still feels like an abstract idea given how distant its release date is. It does have a director, but still. It's super far away.
What's tragic is the mismanagement of the characters. DC and Warner Bros. really need to get their priorities straight, especially given the rich tapestry of characters and stories which defines DC. There's opportunity here. The company just needs to recognize it's there and then take it.
During an interview with Comicbook.com, the Rock gave a bit of context regarding
Black Adam, how he starts, he starts off as a villain. Then, he becomes an anti-hero. And then he might become a hero or he might not.
Good stuff. That's more information we can chew on. Producer Hiram Garcia gave us even more by providing a far more detailed answer. Both are clearly excited for the film, which has no release date and nothing of real substance to divulge just yet.
Well, you're going to meet is you're going to meet a character who's going through a journey. And I think the idea is, look, we know the root of obviously Black Adam. He was created as a villain. And through the love of the fans and through some great writers and storytellers, he evolved into an antihero. The antihero is a character that we always loved and that we responded to. But we understand that there's been many aspects to Black Adam through him. But ultimately this is a guy who he does have a moral compass, as skewed as it may be. And ultimately he is a guy that everything has always been driven by his family and what happens to them. And he is never opposed to unleashing hell when you cross him. So I think when you add in those elements of that DNA, those are things we're very aware of.
Clearly Black Adam has the potential to be a long running character in the DC live-action universe. Although whether or not these plans come to fruition will likely rely on how his first movie does. Whenever it finally arrives.
