Halt the storming stampede of The Lion King, the vintage ‘60s camera on Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Spider-Man’s web-shooters: Edgar Wright has something to say! The incomparable director of Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Baby Driver recently wrapped principal photography on his latest film, Last Night In Soho, and now he's sharing this first look at his jump to horror. Check it out:
How cryptic! The director is bringing some intrigue to his upcoming film, which opens next year. Thomasin McKenzie, one of two female leads in Last Night in Soho, looks horrified by whatever she is staring at as she dons dark and dramatic makeup around her eyes. In Edgar Wright’s Instagram post, the writer/director showed love to the cast and crew as he likely heads into the editing room.
19-year-old Thomasin McKenzie is a relative newcomer but she’ll soon star in Taika Waititi’s Hitler satire Jojo Rabbit and Netflix’s The King movie alongside Timothée Chalamet and Robert Pattinson, both coming soon. The plot for Last Night in Soho is being kept under wraps but it will apparently take place in Central London in both the ‘60s and the present day. McKenzie’s character will be of modern times, while Glass’ Anya Taylor-Joy will lead the ‘60s section of the film.
Last Night In Soho will also star Doctor Who’s Matt Smith, Attack the Block’s Michael Ajao, Game of Thrones’ Diana Rigg, and Murder Mystery’s Terence Stamp. Here’s another behind-the-scenes look at Last Night in Soho via Edgar Wright:
From the above poster and a close look at a couple of the shots, it looks like the director is going for an aesthetic of bright neon lights. While Edgar Wright is best known for contributing to the action-comedy genre, this movie is said to be a straight-up psychological horror-thriller. He also said this about Last Night in Soho to Empire back in January:
I realized I had never made a film about central London – specifically Soho, somewhere I’ve spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years. With Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead you make movies about places you’ve lived in. This movie is about the London I’ve existed in.
Still confused about what’s coming up in Last Night in Soho? Us too – except for the setting! The movie will follow the success of 2017’s Baby Driver, which made $226 million worldwide on a $34 million budget. A sequel to Baby Driver is also reportedly on the way, since Ansel Elgort has said he’s seen a script.
Last Night in Soho will be hitting theaters on September 25, 2020.
