By this point in 2019, you’ve more than likely clowned around with Pennywise and The Losers’ Club, courtesy of director Andy Muschietti’s IT Chapter Two. Should that statement be untrue, it’s recommended that you fix that, especially if you happen to be a horror fan. However, if you’re looking for something scary in theaters past that film, then we have you covered.
In addition to a bunch of horror movies that are headed to Netflix in the coming weeks, there’s also a bunch of films you can catch at a theater near you before 2019 is over. And if you’re one of those people who likes to keep Halloween in their hearts year round, this list goes up to December 13, which happens to land on a Friday this year.
The spooky season is about to start, so light your torch and come with us on a walk through the crypt of movies set to shake you to the core through the rest of the year.
Zombieland: Double Tap
Release Date: October 9th
Admittedly, Zombieland: Double Tap, much like its predecessor from 2009, is not that scary of a movie. There are horror elements present, especially with this new film promising a new breed of zombie on the way, but the series has always traded more on the comedy side of the coin.
Still, horror-comedy is a genre that has a good home in this part of the year, and with Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin reuniting for this decade’s worth of zombie slaying humor, Zombieland: Double Tap is set to bring everyone back to the world of the undead.
Countdown
Release Date: October 25
Death is one of those things from the real world that can easily cross over into the world of fiction, and still maintain its fearfulness. Countdown is about to do exactly that, but with a catch: there’s now an app that can predict the exact moment in time that a person is about to die. Which leads the film’s lead, You star Elizabeth Lail, to find out that her character Quinn only has a little under three days to live.
Countdown is a movie that we didn’t really know much about until recently, when the film dropped its first trailer. It couldn’t have happened at a better time, as the weekend before Halloween really didn’t look like it had a proper holiday offering. Now, if you’re looking to kill some time before the big night, you’ve got something to look forward to.
Doctor Sleep
Release Date: November 8
Probably the ringer of this list of horror films heading into the fall season, Doctor Sleep owes its pedigree to both Stephen King’s iconic novels telling the story of Danny Torrance, and Stanley Kubrick’s interpretation of the first story in the lot, The Shining. This time out, writer/director Mike Flanagan is at the wheel, telling the story of a grown Danny, played by Ewan McGregor.
Decades after his harrowing experience at The Overlook, the man with “The Shine” has to protect a young girl with gifts similar to his. With a cult known as The True Knot hunting down those sorts of people in order to consume their powers, Doctor Sleep continues the legacy of Danny’s special powers, and the good they can do in the world.
Brahms: The Boy II
Release Date: December 6
It has been quite the year for killer dolls, as Annabelle, Chucky and now Brahms have made playtime in 2019 a deadlier affair than usual. Brahms: The Boy II picks up in the place that started it all, the mansion that once belonged to the Heelshire family, but was last seen going up in flames at the end of The Boy.
A new family, led by Katie Holmes’ character Lisa, is ready to move in and make the place their own. But, of course, Brahms still lurks somewhere in the shadows. And he’s found someone new to play with: Lisa’s son, Jude, played by Christopher Convery. As you can see in the photo above, things get pretty serious, as these friends start to dress alike. Which, knowing Brahms’ previous history, doesn’t bode well.
Black Christmas
Release Date: December 13
Blumhouse launched somewhat of a sneak attack when it announced that Black Christmas was going to be released towards the end of the year, as no one had even heard a whisper about the film’s existence. Yet here we are, just a couple of short months from the second reinvention of that classic story of a slasher hunting down his prey. Of course, there’s a lot of chatter out there about how director Sophia Taikal’s new version of director Bob Clark’s original film is a wide departure from the Black Christmas formula.
Not to mention, there’s been a bit of a warning going around that the trailer to the Blumhouse variant is so spoilery, you shouldn’t watch it if you want to go in fresh. Whether you watch the trailer or not, the idea of a major horror movie towards the end of fall, opening on Friday the 13th, and just before Christmas, sounds pretty killer.
About now, you’re probably feeling haunted by the horror films headed your way this fall. If so, then we’ve done our job well, and can now go back to the shadows from whence we’ve come.
