For actor Rupert Grint, his time as Ron Weasley on the big screen came to an end with 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. But the story of Ron Weasley, and his friends Harry Potter and Hermione Granger, continued on in the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Ron and the other characters are played by different actors on the stage than they were in the films, but Rupert Grint is actually open to appearing in the ‘genius’ Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, as he explained:
I saw it in London a few years ago. It's incredible! It's quite a strange, out-of-body experience to see. I mean, never say never! It's a great story. It's kind of a genius extension of those characters. But I don't know. I haven't really thought about that.
Although Rupert Grint hasn’t thought about joining Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, presumably to reprise his role as Ron Weasley, he seems fairly open to the possibility. He could have been diplomatic and said that his time as Ron was over and that he was interested in pursuing new things and that it was someone else’s turn to play the character, but he leaves the door open, admitting that you can never say never.
So it’s not impossible that the actor who first proved that Weasley is our King could one day play the grown up manager of Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes in Cursed Child. As Rupert Grint told ET, he’s seen Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (unlike Daniel Radcliffe) and he found it to be incredible and really liked where it took the characters. The actor even called it ‘genius’ and he seems to really appreciate the story of Cursed Child, a story that has proven rather divisive among Potterheads.
It sounds like watching someone else play Ron was a bit strange for Rupert Grint and maybe since he’s such a fan of the play itself, he’d like to step onstage to give it a go. Rupert Grint has spoken about how he almost quit acting after the Harry Potter series and about how he had a hard time distancing himself from Ron, so it’s cool to hear he doesn’t feel any need to reject the character now.
Like his Harry Potter co-star Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint does have some theatre experience, having played a minor role on London’s West End in Mojo and in the Broadway play It’s Only a Play opposite Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. So he could definitely hop on stage and do it. Maybe he could even play a different role, although that might be distracting.
And if he were to play Ron, you’d have to have Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson back as Harry and Hermione. A limited engagement of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child with those three actors would be a huge event that you’d probably need some liquid luck or a full Gringotts vault's worth of gold to get tickets to.
Of course, I think for most Harry Potter fans, the hope would be to see another movie with the trio, be it a feature film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child or a different story. While we lack the divination skills to see if that will happen, you can see Rupert Grint on the small screen in M. Night Shyamalan’s new Apple TV+ show Servant, a show that CinemaBlend’s own Mike Reyes fears he must watch.
