Jason Momoa Teases Aquaman 2 Will Be Bigger Than The Original
We still have a few years to go until we get to dive back in to the world of Atlantis for Aquaman 2, but if Jason Momoa’s words are anything to go by, the DC sequel will be well worth the wait. James Wan’s Aquaman was a massive and massively successful film and according to Jason Momoa, Aquaman 2 will be even bigger than the original. The star of the upcoming Apple TV+ series See recently addressed the scale of the sequel film, saying:
I think we all naturally assume that most sequels in film franchises will be bigger than the originals. Aliens was bigger than Alien, T2 was bigger than The Terminator and the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Fast & Furious franchise have all gotten bigger over time. Aquaman was a global hit, making over $1.1 billion so it’s only natural to think that Aquman 2 would be bigger, but according to Jason Momoa, it’s going to be way bigger and that’s intriguing.
According to Jason Momoa, who spoke with ET at the premiere of See, Aquaman 2 will be a way bigger movie than the original and it will have a lot going on and on multiple levels. That might seem obvious but if you’ve seen the first film, you know that it definitely wasn’t lacking in terms of scale. Aquaman was an absolutely massive blockbuster so if Aquaman 2 is going bigger, the question is how.
Aquaman wasn’t a small relatively contained story that planted seeds for a wider world to be explored in future films if the original was successful, a la say John Wick or Deadpool; Aquaman was huge. James Wan’s film not only introduced us to Atlantis, but also to the seven undersea kingdoms, most of which we actually got to see.
The end of the film also featured an absurdly huge battle among these kingdoms, with tons of combatants and gargantuan sea creatures that is going to be hard to top in terms of sheer scale in Aquaman 2. Jason Momoa sounds confident that it will though and he apparently had some ideas about how to make it happen.
The actor who plays Arthur Curry has said that he came in to Warner Bros. with a big pitch for the sequel and that it is all mapped out. It seems that Jason Momoa worked with the film’s writer David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and the two have got the story locked in.
What that story will be we can merely speculate. One way Aquaman 2 could be bigger would be to bring in the surface world, which is where it seemed like things were heading based on the end of that film and the post-credits sequence. Yahya Abdul-Mateen’s Black Manta will probably be back and he may not be the only enemy Arthur Curry has to face off with if Jason Momoa’s hints about the sequel are any indication.

Patrick Wilson’s Orm may also be back but he probably won’t be the big bad this time around. There are plenty of different cues Aquaman 2 could take from the comics about where to take the story as well. Whatever the story is, it sounds like we can expect it to be even bigger in scale this time around.
Aquaman 2 splashes into theaters on December 16, 2022. Presumably you want to see some movies before then, so check out what’s arriving next year in our 2020 Release Schedule.
