Originally set to drop on Disney+ on December 11, Avengers: Endgame ended up being available on the streaming service on Day One, and it came with a fun surprise. Among the special features was the deleted scene of Tony Stark speaking with his grown-up daughter Morgan, played by 13 Reasons Why actress Katherine Langford, within the Soul Stone; a scene that had not been included on the home media release.
Regarding why Avengers: Endgame scene was thrown on Disney+, Katherine Langford was told that it simply boiled down to fan interest. In her words:
I heard that’s why it’s out though. That’s what I was told. It was literally out because people wanted to see it. Which is also really cool.
Katherine Langford talked about her time on Avengers: Endgame while plugging her latest movie, Knives Out, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Langford’s involvement in Endgame was reported in October 2018, and shortly after the movie came out and she was nowhere to be seen, it was revealed that she’d been cast as the adult Morgan Stark, who Tony saw before dying due to using all the Infinity Stones to wipe out Thanos and his forces.
For months fans have had to imagine how this conversation specifically unfolded, but thanks to Disney+ (which is offering a free seven-day trial), they can now watch it to their heart’s content. As for why this Avengers: Endgame scene was removed, directors Joe and Anthony Russo said on the attached commentary that because the audience didn’t have a relationship with the adult version of Morgan, so the moment didn’t feel as “powerful.”
Even though the Tony/Morgan scene didn’t make the cut for Avengers: Endgame, Tony seeing a familiar within the Soul Stone Stone matches up with how this Infinity Stone works when one channels all six Stones at once. When Thanos unleashed The Decimation at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, he saw his ‘daughter’ Gamora as a child, and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely revealed that they’d scripted an Endgame scene where Bruce Banner spoke with The Hulk when he snapped those who were dusted five years earlier back to life.
With Tony Stark dead and Gwyneth Paltrow not planning on reprising Pepper Potts (unless Robert Downey Jr. is involved), it’s unclear if we’ll ever see Morgan Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe again. If it happens sooner rather than later, it’s possible Katherine Langford could reprise the role, but if it doesn’t happen for many years, then perhaps Alexandra Rabe, who played Morgan as a child, could play her again. Regardless, the Stark legacy will live on in the MCU, and if she’s anything like her father, Morgan will grow up to be quite technologically talented.
