Watch Tom Hanks Brighten Your Day By Channeling Mister Rogers And Reading Nice Tweets
Today is Thanksgiving, a day in which one expresses gratitude for everything they appreciate has happened in their life over the past year. When it comes to movies, one of the biggest gifts of 2019 has been Tom Hanks playing Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood; you’d be hard pressed to find anyone better for the role of the beloved children’s television icon.
Whether you’re in need of some holiday spirit or just can’t get enough of all-around nice guy Tom Hanks, check out the below video of the actor channeling Mr. Rogers as he reads some nice tweets.
Twitter may be a cesspool for negativity, but look around long enough and you’ll find some tweets that will brighten your day rather than cast a cloud over it. Luckily for the folks running the Twitter Movies account, they had Tom Hanks around to read some collected positive tweets, and you can’t go wrong with that.
The positive tweets Tom Hanks read included a McDonald’s worker sharing how they’d include 11 chicken nuggets in a 10-piece meal, a woman who received a developed picture of her cat from an old lady, and an abandoned dog with OCD now living his life finding injured or misplaced koalas during wildfire season. We can also all probably relate to the woman who thanked a fellow train passenger who turned on the subtitles for The Office episode he was watching when he noticed she was following along with it.
Tom Hanks also got a little choked up reading a tweet about a girl who showed a tasty treat her dad made for her after she’d been broken up with. All that, plus a girl talking about how her classmate gave her his chicken shawarma when he learned she’d skipped lunch just to get to class on time, and these Tweets serve as a pleasant reminder that there are good people in this world. Hanks letting us know about them is the cherry on top of this proverbial sundae.
I know Tom Hanks reading these nice tweets is just part of him making the press rounds to promote A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, but if there’s anyway the folks at Twitter can arrange for him to come in every Thanksgiving to read more of these kind of tweets, that would be deeply appreciated. If that’s not possible, then maybe Twitter could make it an annual tradition by bringing in other nice actors to read the tweets, like Keanu Reeves.
Rather than serve as a traditional biopic of Fred Rogers’ life, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is loosely based on an Esquire profile written about him in the 1990s, and follows Matthew Rhys’ Lloyd Vogel, a jaded journalist who’s tasked with interviewing Mr. Rogers. As he gets to know Rogers, Vogel starts overcoming his skepticism and learns about empathy, kindness and decency from the TV personality. The movie has been met with critical acclaim, ranking 96% among critics on Rotten Tomatoes and earning an A on Cinemascore.
