The Petition For Danny DeVito To Play Wolverine In The MCU Just Hit A Big Milestone

We don’t know when and we don’t know where, but the Mutants are coming to the MCU. And when they arrive it seems probable that the most popular member of the X-Men, Wolverine, will arrive with them. That means that someone new will need to don the claws, replacing Hugh Jackman, but who? Well a group of fans has someone particular in mind: actor Danny DeVito. A petition for Danny DeVito to play Wolverine in the MCU just hit a big milestone.

The petition over on Change.org to have Danny DeVito play the rebooted Wolverine in the MCU has passed a whopping 50,000 signatures. That number is still climbing too and as of this writing the petition sits at 53,080 signatures. That’s a lot of people rooting for the now 75-year-old actor to rock some adamantium claws and show that he’s the best there is at what he does.

In the petition page, the petition’s creator, going by Ring Arius, contends that the only person able to pull Wolverine off in the MCU is none other than Danny DeVito. To support this claim, this petitioner cites DeVito’s diminutive stature. This mountain of a man stands a mere 4’10" tall. Folks, he’s short enough.

Although the 6’2" Hugh Jackman defined the role, many have hoped that a rebooted Wolverine in the MCU would return the character to his short comic roots. Most of the actors rumored or suggested for the role of Logan are not quite short enough for Wolverine’s 5’3" frame. Danny DeVito actually manages to come in under the mark, so as far as tests that must be passed to play Wolverine, DeVito aces that one.

The petitioner also notes that Danny DeVito is capable of fighting and not afraid to get dirty, as evidenced by his character Frank Reynolds’ wrestling persona “The Trashman” in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He might not quite have Wolverine’s muscles or his full head of hair, but it’s a solid and hilarious argument.

If Danny DeVito were to land the Wolverine role, it wouldn’t be his first comic book character. The actor famously played The Penguin in Tim Burton’s 1992 film Batman Returns, a role that Colin Farrell will soon play in Matt Reeves’ Batman film starring Robert Pattinson.

Danny DeVito isn’t the only name that has been floated by fans as the next Wolverine. Other people that have been suggested are former Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, Rocketman star Taron Egerton, Scott Eastwood, Keanu Reeves, and Garrett Hedlund, to name a few. But hey, maybe Danny DeVito is the dark horse contender to watch out for.

In reality, this has 0% chance of happening, but just because he won’t play Wolverine doesn’t mean Danny DeVito shouldn’t be in the MCU. He was considered as the voice of Rocket Raccoon and although that isn’t the direction James Gunn went in for Guardians of the Galaxy, with a whole new phase upon us, there are plenty of new characters Danny DeVito could play. MODOK maybe?
