After years of supporting appearances, Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow will soon get her own solo movie. Appropriately titled Black Widow, Cate Shortland's upcoming blockbuster will kick off Phase Four of the MCU, and dive deeper into the history and psyche of Natasha Romanoff. And according to Kevin Feige, the upcoming solo flick will also shed a light on her decisions throughout The Russo Brothers' pair of Avengers movies, Infinity War and Endgame.
Black Widow is set in between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Infinity War, but it'll also touch in events further in the title character's past. First instance, the first trailer showed her signing up for S.H.I.E.L.D. with Thaddeus Ross. Plus, her family's inclusion will no doubt feature plenty of flashbacks to their life together. Kevin Feige recently spoke to how the long-awaited solo movie would inform her choices in Avengers, saying:
Now this is interesting. It looks like Natasha's entire tenure in the MCU will be explored throughout Black Widow. And while we ultimately know how her story will end, the Black Widow movie will give new context as to her choices in the fight against Thanos. I've got to assume this will be especially true when it comes to her death scene in Endgame, although Kevin Feige's comments to IGN could reference a number of scenes.

During Endgame's Time Heist, Natasha battles Hawkeye to sacrifice herself, and therefore procure the Soul Stone for the team. While it seemed that her motivations were due to Clint's family, she might have had other reasons for making this selfless choice. It's unclear what happens to the other Widows and David Harbour's Red Guardian throughout the course of Black Widow, but she presumably didn't see them during the five year time jump.

It should be fascinating to se what is exactly tackled throughout the course of Black Widow's runtime. Scarlett Johansson previously stated that the solo movie gave her closure after her character's death during Endgame's second act. Because while Tony was given a lakeside funeral and Cap got his happy ending, Natasha's ending was more of an unceremonious one. Because once they got back, Thanos quickly came knocking.
Black Widow will kickstart Phase Four of the MCU on May 1st, 2020. In the meantime, check out our 2020 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
