Another Key Thor Character Is Returning For Love And Thunder
Not only does the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder mark the first time a superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is leading a solo film series longer than the conventional trilogy, it’s also providing the opportunity for Chris Hemsworth’s God of Thunder to reunite with some characters we haven’t seen in a while. We’ve known for nearly a year and a half now that Natalie Portman is reprising Jane Foster, and today brings word that Jaimie Alexander will be back as Lady Sif.
This Thor: Love and Thunder update comes from Deadline, although Marvel didn’t comment and no details were provided about how Sif fits into the story. The report also mentioned that Jaimie Alexander might have a guest spot on the Loki series, which drops on Disney+ next May. Assuming that’s true, that will serve as a nice appetizer before the main course of Sif’s presence in the fourth Thor movie.
Jaimie Alexander has been part of the Thor franchise since the beginning, with Lady Sif accompanying the God of Thunder, Loki and the Warriors Three in the first movie when they went to stir up trouble on Jotunheim, and later traveling to Earth with Fandral, Hogun and Volstagg to find the powerless Thor. Sif returned in Thor: The Dark World, where it was revealed she had romantic feelings for Thor, although by that time, he was deeply in love with Jane Foster. Alexander also reprised Sif for two episodes of ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
However, when Thor: Ragnarok rolled around, Lady Sif was nowhere to be seen, which is rather lucky for her considering how many of Asgard’s warriors were killed by Hela (including the Warriors Three), as well as the realm later being destroyed by Surtur. In real life, Jaimie Alexander was unable to participate in Ragnarok due to being busy with her NBC series Blindspot, which wrapped up its five-season run in July. Shortly before Ragnarok’s release, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed that Sif was banished from Asgard by Loki during his time disguised as Odin.
Lady Sif was also among the half of the universe that was wiped out by Thanos’ snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, although with that genocide being undone during Avengers: Endgame, the stage has been set for her return in Thor: Love and Thunder. Here’s hoping Sif talks about what she’s been up to since the events of Thor: The Dark World.
The news of Jaimie Alexander returning to the Thor franchise comes just a day after it was revealed that Christian Bale, who was confirmed to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder this past March, will be playing Gorr the God Butcher. So Chris Hemsworth’s Thor will need all the help he can get vanquishing this baddie. Along with Lady Sif and Jane Foster, the latter of whom will transform into The Mighty Thor, Love and Thunder’s cast includes Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and Taika Waititi reprising Korg on top of his directorial and co-writing duties. The movie will also feature some, if not all of the Guardians of the Galaxy, with Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord being the first reported member to show up.
Thor: Love and Thunder has now been rescheduled for May 6, 2022, and is gearing up to begin filming in Australia next month. Check back with CinemaBlend for more updates on its progress, and stay current on what else the MCU has coming to the big screen with our Marvel movies guide.
