With all that went down in this week’s episode of Loki, “The Nexus Event,” the final two episodes of Season 1 (assuming the Disney+ series gets a second season) are shaping up to be something special. I won’t provide any spoilers here on what happened regarding the main story, but it is worth pointing out a simple line of dialogue from Owen Wilson’s Mobius in “The Nexus Event” that teased some unexpected corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While speaking with Wunmi Mosaku’s Hunter B-15, Mobius noted how the Time Variance Authority has dealt with “Kree, Titans and vampires.”
The Kree species has been spotlighted in Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel, the sole Titan we’ve met so far in the MCU is Thanos, and while we haven’t seen vampires in this franchise yet, we know they’re on the way thanks to the Blade reboot. CinemaBlend’s own Nick Venable had the chance to speak with Loki director Kate Herron, and when he inquired about Mobius’ references, she provided just this cryptic answer:
I would say you’d have to ask Kevin Feige [laughs]… That’s something with Marvel for sure.
That’s not much to work with, but it sounds like Mobius’ line about Kree, Titans and vampires wasn’t simply thrown in by the Loki writers unsupervised. Whether Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige actually requested these creatures be mentioned or if someone else high up in the Marvel food chain gave permission for the writers to mention the three species is unclear. Evidently though, it’s a big enough deal that Kate Herron wasn’t willing to divulge any specifics.
It’s the mention of vampires that’s especially notable considering that this was the first time these bloodsuckers have been confirmed to exist in the MCU. Oh sure, Korg offhandedly mentioned them in Thor: Ragnarok when he picked up a wooden fork weapon on Sakaar, but that came across as more of a joke. Mobius’ mention, on the other hand, was serious, so now folks who weren’t aware that the Blade reboot was coming at least have been looped in that vampires are out there, and evidently some of them have messed with the Sacred Timeline.
While it’s doubtful we’ll see any Kree, Titans or vampires in Loki Season 1’s final two episodes, the MCU is known for delivering surprises, so such prospects shouldn’t be ruled out entirely. But as far as vampires are concerned, we can look forward to them causing trouble in Blade, with Mahershala Ali’s version of the character slicing them up more than two decades after Weley Snipes debuted as Marvel’s Daywalker. The Blade reboot is being written by Watchmen’s Stacy Osei-Kuffour, and filming is expected to begin in July 2022.
