It’s been a year now since Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly went public with their relationship, and the couple doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. The pair have quickly become a favorite Hollywood couple, between their supportive social media posts and collaborating on projects such as MGK’s “Bloody Valentine” music video. But for all the support theTransformers actress has received for her new flame, she’s also been criticized for one specific thing about their relationship she’s bothered by.
The 35-year-old actress got candid about the public backlash her and Machine Gun Kelly have received since they started dating. Megan Fox spoke to a double-standard she is held to with these words:
You want to talk about patriarchy? The fact that he's four years younger than me, and people want to act like I'm dating a younger man. He's 31, and I'm 35. Granted, he's lived like he's 19 his whole life, but he isn't 19. No one would blink twice if George Clooney was dating someone four years younger. Four years? Go fuck yourself. We would have been in high school together. That's so ridiculous that women are treated that way.
During an interview with InStyle, Megan Fox called out critics who claim she is dating a “younger man” by reminding people that the rapper is just four years younger than she is and therefore not within a large enough gap to even be considered controversial. She used George Clooney as an example, who actually has a 17-year age gap to his younger wife Amal.
Megan Fox is of course speaking to a larger gender issue in society that is still present between men and women. Fox has certainly been exposed to a lot of unfair criticism over the years too, often in regards to being heavily objectified in the Transformers franchise and through the marketing of Jennifer’s Body, which was targeted to teen boys despite the story being written with women in mind as an audience.
Fox did point out that there could be judging eyes on her relationship because Machine Gun Kelly does look younger than he is. The rapper wears youthful clothing and Fox previously was married to a much older man in Brian Austin Green, who is 47. The couple had three kids together prior to their divorce. From the outside, it could look like Megan Fox is dating much younger, but it’s just a different dynamic than she had before.
During the cover story, Machine Gun Kelly also put his two cents into the relationship. The singer shared his devotion to the Jennifer’s Body actress by saying she is unlike anyone he’s ever met, along with these sentiments:
I just want people to understand this is real. I don't think people get the opportunity to believe in real, great love, and that's what we have together.
Fox’s ex-husband Brian Austin Green has also moved on as well with Sharna Burgess, who is over a decade younger than him. Despite some growing pains between the former couple and co-parents, it’s great to see them finding love elsewhere. Now just get off Fox’s back for her minor age difference with Machine Gun Kelly.
