While the theatrical industry still isn’t operating at pre-pandemic levels just yet, it’s certainly in better shape than it was throughout most of 2020. One of the best examples of this is Godzilla vs. Kong, which came out at the end of March. Despite having also been available to HBO Max subscribers at no extra cost for 31 days, the fourth MonsterVerse movie has proven to be one of the biggest theatrical successes of the pandemic era, and now it’s hit yet another box office milestone by crossing $450 million worldwide.
At the time of this writing, Godzilla vs. Kong’s worldwide haul rests at nearly $459.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo. Within the hierarchy of highest-grossing 2021 movies, Godzilla vs. Kong at in fourth place, sitting comfortably ahead of A Quiet Place: Part II’s $279.6 million and trailing behind F9’s $544.1 million. Chinese pictures Hi, Mom and Detective Chinatown 3 are resting in first and second place, respectively.
As far as its commercial placement among its fellow MonsterVerse movies goes, Godzilla vs. Kong performed much better than its immediate predecessor, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which made $386.6 million worldwide in 2019. However, 2014’s Godzilla and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island are still the cream of this franchise’s box office crop, with the former pulling in a little over $529 million and the latter pulling in $566 million. After nearly four full months of availability, it’s doubtful Godzilla vs. Kong will catch up to the first two MonsterVerse movies, but its current total still isn’t anything to sneeze at.
Taking place five years after the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong saw the two eponymous beasts clashing for the first time in an American blockbuster setting, with the story also involving the exploration of Hollow Earth and Apex Cybernetics developing a weapon to wipe out all of Earth’s Titans. Along with Millie Bobby Brown and Kyle Chandler reprising their respective roles of Madison and Mark Russell, respectively, the cast also includes Alexander Skarsgård, Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Eiza González, Julian Dennison, Demián Bichir and Shun Oguri, among others. Blair Witch’s Adam Wingard directed the feature, and Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein wrote the script.
One bonus of Godzilla vs. Kong’s commercial success is that it looks like Warner Bros and Legendary are keen on keeping the MonsterVerse going. While it hasn’t been officially confirmed yet if the franchise will get another installment, it was reported back in April that Adam Wingard was being courted to helm the next MonsterVerse movie, with Son of Kong supposedly one of the stories being considered. Needless to say that if this project, or anything else MonsterVerse-related, is greenlit, we’ll let you know.
