Let's just face the facts, OK? Most of us, no matter how hard we try to avoid it, have at least some fascination with celebrities and their assorted romances. And while we've all been obsessing over the latest developments in the rekindled romance of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, or trying to figure out which famous lady Pete Davidson is now squiring around New York, Underworld legend Kate Beckinsale just revealed that she's never really been on a real date before, and instead marries or gets pregnant by all the men she's interested in romantically. I know! Let's break this down, shall we?
Kate Beckinsale has had a few high profile relationships during her many years as a famous person, with one of the most recent of those being the brief time she spent in 2019 with none other than the aforementioned SNL star, Pete Davidson. But, while Beckinsale was speaking to Extra about her new action movie, Jolt, the conversation turned to dating, and when she was asked about the worst date she's ever been on, Beckinsale replied:
Do you know I've really barely ever been on a date? I literally meet someone, get to know them at work, and then either marry them or get pregnant by them, on the whole.
Whoa, whoa...WHOA. This cannot be possible, right? Or, can it? Alright, first of all, I'd like to direct your eyes back to Kate Beckinsale's quote, and note that she said "barely ever" when discussing her tendency to actually date like a regular person. So, she has been on dates, but, by her estimation of "dating" anyway, it just hasn't happened all that often. And, you know, dating is kinda terrible, so good for Kate Beckinsale where the avoidance of that potentially large landmine is concerned.
Of course, as we all know, Kate Beckinsale is a movie star. And, as movies stars tend to work and socialize with other movies stars (or those who work in adjacent fields) it's quite easy to see how what Beckinsale says might be true. From what I've heard, film sets are intriguing places. Working very closely with someone for a few months at a time, while you also have lots of downtime in which to reveal things you might have in common and so forth, is exactly the kind of thing that would lead to getting to know a person pretty well without actually having to say, "Hey, you wanna get dinner sometime?" and thereby end up in a romance with literally zero actual dates having occurred.
Beckinsale was in a relationship with actor Michael Sheen (of the recently cancelled Prodigal Son) for about seven years (they share a 22-year-old daughter), and they apparently met while doing a touring production of a play together. She was also married to director Len Wiseman for 11 years, after the two met while filming the first Underwold movie, which he directed. While Beckinsale has certainly had some romances where there was probably at least a bit of dating involved, it does appear that her longest relationships, at least, have involved her getting to know folks at work and that being the beginning.
It kinda sounds like Kate Beckinsale is, truly, just fine with her largely date free lifestyle, though, and there's nothing wrong with that.
