As soon as Warner Bros. announced that Zack Snyder’s Justice League would finally be released via HBO Max, some fans immediately began calling for the studio to do the same with David Ayer’s 2017 Suicide Squad movie. Both blockbusters suffered from studio interference, and Ayer recently shared an emotional post further explaining his feelings about the movie. And now original Suicide Squad star Jay Hernandez has shared his support for the director.
While David Ayer has been open about how his vision was muddled in 2017’s Suicide Squad, the upcoming release of James Gunn’s sequel/reboot has brought the subject back to the forefront. Jay Hernandez played El Diablo in that infamous blockbuster, with the character seemingly killed off in the final battle. Hernandez posted his support of Ayer on social media, while also revealing true feelings about his character’s fate. Check it out below
Well, there you have it. There’s clearly nothing but love between Jay Hernandez and David Ayer, despite how Suicide Squad’s theatrical cut ultimately played out. It’s also clear that Ayer wasn’t the only one disappointed with how the story was changed.
The above post comes to us from Jay Hernandez’s personal Twitter account. The Bad Moms actor brought El Diablo to life in Suicide Squad, and was one of the biggest characters in the ensemble project. And it seems one of the ways that the story was altered was by killing off the pyrokinetic metahuman, much to the actor’s chagrin. Hernandez specifically referenced being a Latino actor, and how it felt being killed off as the industry calls for better representation.

As Jay Hernandez mentions, it’s been difficult for him to watch as David Ayer struggled before and after Suicide Squad’s release. The film industry is ultimately a business, and unfortunately filmmakers have been known to lose battles to studios. But since Zack Snyder got finally to share his vision for Justice League, it’s unclear if the Ayer Cut will ever become a reality.

Unfortunately, Jay Hernandez was not one of the original Suicide Squad actors included in James Gunn’s upcoming blockbuster. Perhaps this is because of his presumed death in the original movie. Although I was always holding out hope that El Diablo would rise from the ashes for another adventure in the DCEU.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will arrive in theaters on August 6th. In the meantime, check out the 2021 movie release dates to plan your next movie experience.
