Knives Out 2 Has Wrapped Filming In Greece, Here’s How Rian Johnson Celebrated
Back in March, a little more than a year after Knives Out 2 was officially greenlit, it was announced that the sequel and Knives Out 3 were acquired by Netflix. Shortly thereafter, Knives Out 2’s cast was assembled and principal photography kicked off in Greece at the end of June. Now that filming in the European country is finished, director/writer Rian Johnson has appropriately celebrated the milestone.
Not only are Rian Johnson and the rest of the Knives Out 2 cast and crew done with their work in Greece, but this also marks the halfway point on the sequel’s shoot. Johnson shared this status update on Benoit Blanc’s next investigation on Twitter, as seen below:
Ok, phew, we don’t need to worry about anyone who worked on Knives Out 2 committing murders during their time in Greece. In all seriousness, it’s nice to know that the sequel is halfway done, meaning that assuming no unexpected problems arise, principal photography should be done by late August, or early September to allow for some wiggle room. Knives Out shot from October 30, 2018 to December 20, 2018, so that time frame lines up.
When Knives Out 2 was originally confirmed to be moving forward, it was expected that it would be a Lionsgate release, just like with the first movie. Instead, Rian Johnson and producing partner Ram Bergman signed a $469 million deal with Netflix for the streaming platform to distribute Knives Out 2 and Knives Out 3, with Johnson and Daniel Craig, who plays private investigator Benoit Blanc, reportedly walking away with over $100 million each. From there, it didn’t take long to get the ball gong on hiring actors and rolling cameras for the next sequel.
No plot details for Knives Out 2 have been revealed yet, other than the obvious fact that it will involve Benoit Blanc taking on a new murder case. But what we lack in story information we make up for in casting announcements/reports, as Daniel Craig will be joined by Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Kate Hudson, Madelyn Cline, Jessica Henwick and Ethan Hawke. And while it initially didn’t seem like anyone besides Craig from Knives Out would participate in the sequel, Don Johnson’s presence in Greece had opened the proverbial door to speculation that he might be reprising Richard Drysdale.
Whether or not that’s the case remains to be seen, but fingers crossed that before the year is over, Rian Johnson or someone affiliated with the sequel provides a clue or two about what this next tale has in store for viewers. Then, of course, there’s the question of when Knives Out 2 will drop on Netflix. Sometime in fall 2022 seems like the best bet, but once an official release date is announced, we here at CinemaBlend will let you know.
