Spider-Man villains are some of the most formidable in the Marvel canon. Of course, one of the most revered and feared foes has been the psychotic Green Goblin. For most Spider-Man fans, Willem Dafoe’s performance in the original Spider-Man film captured every ounce of the character’s spirit and essence. With Spider-Man: No Way Home surrounded in multiverse rumors, moviegoers have been clamoring to see if Dafoe’s Green Goblin will pop up. This idea has grown even more with Alfred Molina’s Dr. Octopus and Jamie Foxx’s Electro be involved. After months of rumors, the Togo star finally responded to his alleged involvement in the Spider-Man sequel.
For fans of the original Spider-Man trilogy, having Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin return for the sequel would be a huge moment. His interpretation of the iconic Marvel villain set the tone for every Spidey villain after him. But whether he’s included in Spider-Man: No Way Home is still up in the air. Like most MCU properties, Dafoe may be sworn to secrecy. When asked by The Wrap if he had "no comment" about these rumors, the actor played coy saying:
Like any Hollywood veteran, Willem Dafoe was able to maneuver the question expertly. While he didn’t say “no,” he didn’t say “yes” either. He still gave some OG Spider-Man fans for his return to the Spidey-verse. Dafoe left things open for his return if the rumors are true. Hopefully, Dafoe’s coyness was a hint at something surprising.
If the rumors do prove true, it would be nice to see Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin once more. Seeing Dafoe terrorize Tom Holland the same way he did Tobey Maguire in the original Spider-Man film. If the actor was to return, the real cherry on top would be the Green Goblin teaming up with Doc Ock, Electro and possibly the Hobgoblin to take on Spider-Man in the sequel. Just imagine all the chaos Dafoe’s presence could bring to Spider-Man: No Way Home would take things up a notch. Despite his response, fans should still keep their fingers crossed for some news.
So, hopefully, the Green Goblin/Willem Dafoe rumors will be proven true. But until Marvel or Dafoe reveal the truth, fans will just have to keep speculating about the Marvel villain’s involvement. But the Green Goblin’s return could’ve been complicated. The actor has multiple projects being released so he may not have had the time to pop up in the film. Fortunately, moviegoers won’t have to wait much longer as Spider-Man: No Way Home arrives in theaters on Dec. 17.
