Ryan Reynolds Reveals That Disney Already Wants Free Guy 2
This weekend’s biggest new film release is 20th Century Studios’ Free Guy, the Ryan Reynolds-led video game action comedy that was once suppose to come out in July 2020. Now it’s available for the masses to watch on the big screen, and along with being met with a lot of positive critical reception, so far Free Guy has pulled in around $10.5 million stateside. Well, Disney, 20th’s parent company, is apparently already quite pleased with how the movie is doing, because Reynolds has revealed the studio is interested in Free Guy 2.
Ryan Reynolds revealed this himself on Twitter, channeling his co-star Taika Waititi, who stars as Antwan in Free Guy, to let people know that Disney wants a sequel. See for yourself:
It is indeed ironic that as an original IP blockbuster, which aren’t as common nowadays as they used to be, Free Guy is now about to be the first installment in a film series. Just two days after Free Guy premiered in theaters (counting the Thursday night screenings), Ryan Reynolds has been informed that Free Guy 2 is in the works. Since this is just the start of the sequel’s development, needless to say there aren’t any details to share about what to expect yet, although Reynolds jokingly said in a follow-up tweet that if Free Guy 2 isn’t called Albuquerque Boiled Turkey, “we’ve failed.”
Directed by Night at the Museum’s Shawn Levy, who recently reunited with Ryan Reynolds to shoot Netflix’s The Adam Project, Free Guy follows Reynolds’ Guy, a bank teller living within the open-world Free City video game. When Guy discovers one day that not only is he a non-player character within this game, but that he and his friends are in danger of being deleted by Antwan, Free City’s creator, he tries to become the game’s new hero to save them. Free Guy’s cast also includes Jodie Comer, Lil Rey Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Joe Keery, among others.
I won’t spoil how Free Guy ends for those who haven’t seen it yet (and if you have, be sure look at our ending breakdown), but suffice it to say that Free Guy 2 now being in the works means that this is just the first chapter of a larger story. Free Guy arrives just two months after Ryan Reynolds starred opposite Samuel L. Jackson and Salma Hayek in The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, and he’ll next be seen alongside Dwayne Johnson and Gal Gadot in Netflix’s Red Notice this November. Reynolds is also preparing to reprise Wade Wilson, Marvel’s Merc with the Mouth, in Deadpool 3, which is being written by Bob’s Burgers duo Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin.
