The Marvel Cinematic Universe is continuing to expand, as new heroes like Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop will enter the fray before the year is out. The ever-growing franchise will also add a new team of heroes to its ranks in the form of the Eternals. Though the characters are only now being introduced, they’ve actually existed within the franchise for centuries, which led many people to wonder why they never intervened in some of its massive battles. This includes the war against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Well, Marvel fans now know the reason for their absence, and they have some hilarious thoughts about it.
The recent Eternals trailer shed plenty of light on the group’s history and explained that they were instructed not to get involved in human events, unless the Deviants, their villainous counterparts, were involved. While many fans seem happy to have finally received this clarification, others aren’t holding back jokes about the group’s decision to sit on the sidelines during Endgame. One Twitter user seems to think the group was busy with other “activities” during the epic battle:
The Eternals may not have joined Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in fighting the Mad Titan, but they have just been sitting and twiddling their thumbs all this time. When possible, they did help to “guide” mankind along during pivotal moments in history. This key fact could be the reason one fan gave this humorous take on the team's decision to stay out of Avengers: Endgame:
On the other hand, some seem to think their reasoning is a lot simpler than that. Another user jokes that the group simply needed a bit of shut-eye:
While the Eternals jokes on social media have been solid, one fan managed to top the others. They provided another possible reason for the team choosing not to participate in the events of Endgame. And they did so by channeling a somewhat controversial development from 2020:
The event in question was the celebrity rendition of “Imagine,” which was led by Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot and featured an array of other A-list celebrities. The purpose of the viral video was to raise morale amid the COVID-19 pandemic, but it didn’t quite pan out the way Gadot or her colleagues probably hoped.

I’d definitely give the Eternals the benefit of the doubt and say that they weren’t having a virtual singalong during the final battle against Thanos. Still, even though we know why they didn’t intervene, you still can’t help but acknowledge their absence. Thankfully though, the Avengers and their allies were triumphant. Avengers: Endgame is available to revisit on Disney+, which you can sign up for using this link.
Marvel Studios appears to be positioning the Eternals to be major players in the MCU moving forward. So it’s probably a safe bet that they won’t be standing idly by during future battles. But before we get too ahead of ourselves there, we can look forward to seeing their cinematic debut when Eternals hits theaters on November 5, 2021.
