Actress Anya Taylor-Joy’s starpower has been steadily growing over the past few years, thanks to notable roles in projects like Split and The Witch. But her acclaimed performance in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit truly turned heads, leading to future projects like the title role in the upcoming Mad Max prequel Furiosa. And Taylor-Joy recently revealed how she’s preparing to take on Charlize Theron’s role.
2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road brought George Miller’s franchise back to theaters in a big way, resulting in ten Oscar nominations and over $300 million at the box office. Fans were thrilled to learn that Furiosa would be getting a prequel, with Anya Taylor-Joy playing a younger version of the character. And it turns out that she’s been spending a ton of time behind the wheel to embody that cinematic badass.
Anya Taylor-Joy’s comments about the process behind Furiosa come from the 25 year-old actress’ conversation with the LA Times. She’s reportedly doing a ton of driving to join the Mad Max franchise, hoping to accomplish most of her own stunts in the mysterious prequel. She also spends time journaling as her characters, including Furiosa.
This update about Furiosa is sure to delight fans of the Mad Max franchise, and may hopefully quell some of the naysayers who were disappointed about recasting Charlize Theron. It seems that Anya Taylor-Joy is committed to inhabiting Furiosa’s mind and body-- including some wild stunt work.
Not much is known about the contents of Furiosa, but it’s definitely exciting to see George Miller returning to that apocalyptic property. Anya Taylor-Joy has experience with genre work like The New Mutants, so she seems like a killer choice to expand the Mad Mad: Fury Road character’s backstory. Still, Charlize Theron herself admitted that she was disappointed about not reprising the role.
When we met Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, she was a hardened Lieutenant of Immorton Joe who had lost her arm prior to the events of the film. Obviously fans are interested to learn the origin of this injury, and what backstory went into her decision to fight back and save Joe’s wives. We’ll just have to wait and see which other characters from Fury Road happen to appear in the prequel.
Clearly Anya Taylor-Joy is thrilled about her role as Furiosa, and it should be interesting to see how this dedication plays out on the big screen. Mad Max: Fury Road is considered one of the best action movies of all time, so there’s certainly high expectations for the next installment. But with George Miller back behind the camera, there’s no telling what the prequel might contain.
