ReelBlend Podcast #32: Visiting The Last Blockbuster, James Gunn And Our Fave Philip Seymour Hoffman Movies
We are entering into the Dog Days of summer at the multiplexes, and since the ReelBlend guys exhausted their Mission: Impossible -- Fallout conversation in previous episodes of the podcast, this week they spend a lot of time on news. Thankfully, there were two massive stories in this news this week, which gave them plenty of time to talk about it.
The first story was James Gunn, and the ongoing deliberations about whether or not Disney should reconsider his firing from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Gunn was removed from the project due to insensitive jokes he made on Twitter years ago. Despite the fact that his Guardians cast released a statement supporting their director, it doesn't look like Disney is going to back off.
In addition, the ReelBlend guys shifted focus over to Star Wars: Episode 9, which made a splash right before the live show by releasing a photo form the first day on set. What did it show? The guys discuss.
Earlier this week, Kevin McCarthy traveled to Bend, Oregon to visit the last Blockbuster video store. Kevin actually worked behind the counter, got a name tag and a t-shirt (and he picked one up for Jake Hamilton, but NOT for Sean O'Connell), and he met an Oregon man who had rented Terminator 2 AND True Romance. So he's basically Kevin's new best friend now.
Then, we got to the #Blend game for this week, and it was a wild one. For starters, the guys chose Philip Seymour Hoffman. But this also was the first week that they tweaked the game to be about their FAVORITE performance by an actor, and not their BEST. We thought it would lead to more personal and passionate discussions, and it certainly managed to do just that.
