Mindy Kaling Is Expecting Her First Child

Congratulations are in order for Mindy Kaling. Apparently, the next big project for the star of The Mindy Project is going to be motherhood, as she is expecting her first child, so says a source close to the comedic actress and author. While the pregnancy news may be a shock for Kaling's fans, the news apparently surprised the 38-year-old actress as well.

The news came from "an insider," who spilled the beans to E!. However, the surprise factor was something the star herself once said would be a welcome situation. In a 2015 interview with Yahoo, Mindy Kaling opened up about having kids and said,

I think I've decided that unlike everything else in my life, I'm going to be fast and loose about kids. I'm going to not actively plan, but if it happens, it would happen.

At that time, Mindy Kaling indicated she would be happy to have children "maybe imminently," and she explained further, saying,

I'm not cavalier about who I would have a kid with. But the thing I ask every parent that I really admire, the one comment they all have is that they wish they had kids earlier.

Reportedly, Mindy Kaling's pregnancy will not affect the production schedule for her work projects. In fact, here she is in an Instagram photo she posted about a week ago to show her and the cast getting "back at it" on the set for the filming of the final season of the show she began in 2012:

In Mindy Kaling's 2015 book, Why Not Me?, the funny lady wrote about the prospect of having children, and she asked the rhetorical question,

What if my kids are really young when I die because I waited too long to have them?

So, what better time than the present to start a family? Yes, technically Mindy Kaling is extra busy these days. She stars in the upcoming Disney interpretation of the Madeleine L'Engle novel A Wrinkle in Time. Academy Award-winning director Ava Duvernay is heading up that project, which stars Reese Witherspoon and Oprah Winfrey in addition to Kaling.

Plus, Mindy Kaling is wrapping up the final installment of her sitcom on Hulu. But now that Kaling is going to be a mom, she might be able to approach her The Mindy Show character, who is also a mother, in a new way. The show has dealt with topics many parents face, such as considerations about breastfeeding in public.

Mindy Kaling has not confirmed the news of her pregnancy, and the father of the child is not clear at this time. Kaling previously was in a relationship with Benjamin Nugentfrom 2008 to 2012.
