Tom Petty Just Released A Posthumous Video
Tom Petty is sadly no longer with us, but his legacy lives on. It was almost one year ago when we lost the iconic singer-songwriter behind classic songs like "Free Fallin'," "Runnin' Down a Dream," "American Girl," "Learning to Fly," "Mary Jane's Last Dance," "Don't Come Around Here No More," and so many more, as well as the man at the forefront of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. It's a grave wound in pop culture that hasn't been healed. It will take time before we learn to say goodbye to Tom Petty, but a few mournful members of the group took the time to remember the iconic music maker by making a music video celebrating the life and legacy that Petty and his band had on music lovers all around the world -- young and old. It's a touching, formidable tribute to a musician whose great impact won't soon be forgotten. Check out the posthumous music video below.
This new music video for "You and Me," a single originally found in Tom Petty's 2002 album The Last DJ, features new background accompaniment recorded on August 3rd of this year in the clubhouse owned by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. This rendition is made appropriately somber and mournful, yet also invigorated and passionate -- much like the musician we unexpectedly and tragically lost on October 2nd, 2017 at the age of 66. Beyond some archive footage and photos of the late Tom Petty scattered throughout, it's ultimately the fans who find themselves at the forefront of this new video, jamming to the singer's songs, rocking out to his tunes and/or wiping away their tears during his more soft and intimate performances.
There's no denying that Tom Petty has left a monumental career behind, one that has touched many people of all walks of life during his years in the public. His songs were able to touch upon the root of humanity in a way that was both sincere and powerful, simple yet profound. There are only a few artists who have really captured the same magnetism as Tom Petty, and it's clear that when he left his world due to a cardiac arrest, he left a cultural crater that won't soon be filled. He was still rocking out his tunes only months before he left this world, as seen in the music video posted above. If you were lucky enough to experience one of his concerts live throughout his decades of touring, you'd know that the experience of seeing Tom Petty and his fellow Heartbreakers perform was quite a phenomenal experience. That's something that's captured quite beautifully in this brand new music video.
Not many people can sell out concert venues for generations upon generations quite like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. And the posthumous music video is good at showing how Tom Petty could capture the rabid imagination of fans of all ages and generations, making songs that were very much indebted to the human spirit. Sure enough, we lost a great talent when Tom Petty passed away. This new video is a fitting farewell to his lost legacy.
