Amazon Reports Massive Spike In The Last Song Streams After Miley And Liam Wedding
After a prolonged, on-and-off engagement, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth finally tied the knot on Christmas weekend. It is a marriage that has long been in the works, particularly as the celebrity couple was reportedly first engaged back in 2012. But the wedding bells have officially been rung. Now, they're ready to enjoy their new lives as husband-and-wife. And in the spirit of reflection and looking back on the long journey that got the couple here, several fans of Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus have gone back and revisited their 2010 romantic melodrama, The Last Song, according to Amazon.
The update was given by Amazon Prime Video's Twitter account. As they note, the celebrity marriage has prompted no shortage of people to go back in time and revisit the days when Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth were just first beginning their love affair -- if primarily on the big screen at that time.
While the romantic fable, adapted by the book of the same name by (you guessed it) Nicholas Sparks (who also co-wrote the screenplay), wasn't very well-received critically, it did fair business commercially. It earned nearly $90 million worldwide from a $20 million budget. That's not The Notebook-like numbers, but it's pretty decent. And it obviously holds a soft spot in the hearts of several viewers, as they felt inclined to revisit the film this past week.
And they revisited it in droves, apparently, if the streams on Amazon had a whopping 2000% uptick. That's certainly nothing to sneeze at, especially for a film that's nearly one decade old. Evidently, there were many "sentimental" people, as Amazon notes, using the service, and these romantic viewers wanted to revisit the story knowing that the actors involved have finally embarked on their happy ending. We wonder if tissue sales spiked up as well...
To this date, The Last Song remains the one-and-only movie to star both Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus. But now that they are officially together, one has to wonder if Hollywood producers are thinking about bringing these lovey-dovey co-stars back together again on the big screen. Particularly if they look at the streaming numbers and realize there might be a sizable audience very eagerly looking to see them acting together again.
But that's for the big spenders in Hollywood to decide. For now, it's evident that many people are enthusiastic to revisit the early days of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's relationship, and Amazon enjoyed the benefits tenfold when it came to streams and downloads of the weepy 2010 drama.
Meanwhile, as far as we can tell, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have been enjoying their newfound married life since their private ceremony one week earlier. With that, Amazon is certainly enjoying their matrimony, in that it is bringing them a whole bunch of cash on an older title on their shelf.
