Gay Couple Files Lawsuit Against Hate Group For Using Engagement Picture
Brian Edwards and Tom Privitere used to love their engagement photograph. Now, thanks to the efforts of Public Advocate of the United States, they can’t look at it without cringing. The hate group altered the background and used it in a series of mailing campaigns to protest a State Senate candidate without their permission. When they were eventually alerted to what happened, the poor men were shocked and saddened that such a beautiful moment was used for hate. In response, they’ve filed a lawsuit asking for the organization to stop using the picture immediately and pay damages and attorney’s fees.
The original photograph of the longtime couple kissing was taken at their engagement party with the New York City skyline in the background by photographer Kristina Hill. According to ABC News, it was later uploaded onto one of the men’s blogs with Hill’s permission who owns the copyright. Sometime later, it was discovered by Public Advocate. The background was changed, and it was forwarded on in a series of mailers questioning the values of a candidate who would support civil unions. You can take a look at the two photographs below…
This whole mess should be enough to turn sensible people’s stomachs. Regardless of how one feels about gay marriage, mocking one of the better moments of two nice people’s lives is shameful and pathetic. The Southern Poverty Law Center has already announced it will donate its time and resources to the case. We’ll keep you updated as the case winds its way through the court system.
