One Track Sunday: Coldplay Covers The Beastie Boys
In the wake of the death of The Beastie Boys’ Adam “MCA” Yauch from a hard fought battle with cancer, memorial news pieces and fan tributes have popped up all over the Internet, but I am uncertain any has come close to the almost fitting weirdness of a recent rendition of “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party).” The cover came from the boys in Coldplay at a concert at the Hollywood Bowl on May 4.
When Chris hopped on to a piano and began playing a lovely piano tune, the audience become hushed in that way that happens sometimes at concerts when people don’t quite know what they are getting into. As Martin jumped into the first verse, a slow-paced ballad about begging mom not to go to school, some audience members began to recognize the track, but it would be easy to see how those not particularly familiar with the Beastie Boys might be lost until the chorus came in. You can check out the video, below.
It continually amazes me how Martin has the capacity to even turn resounding, riotous songs into sad, sappy, pseudo-heartfelt bullshit, but I guess at this point I should be resigned to it. Still the cover was a nice thought and at least worth a watch. R.I.P. Adam Yauch.
