By all rights, “Pound the Alarm” should not have been Nicki Minaj’s newest single. By all rights, the laud should have gone to “Va Va Voom,” an unabashed pop track that allows Minaj to repeat syllables like “Wa-Wa-We” to match the “Va Va Voom” of the chorus. After “Va Va Voom” won a fan competition for the fourth single off of Minaj’s second album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, the song seemed to be set in stone, until “Pound the Alarm” hit the club circuit, thusly standing out with a bright sign shouting it deserved its own music video.
The video for “Pound the Alarm” is visually similar to the 2011 film Rio and has about as much depth. I never really mind when Nicki cavorts around in costumes the American Girl Company would have to shun or oppositely acts as if she is the most hardass female around, but if that doesn’t suit you, there are also fire-eating blue men and fireworks to get you through. Granted, where “Pound the Alarm” stands out next to tracks like “Va Va Voom” are the moments where the early rhythm stops, making room for gleeful jumping, and maybe a little panting for those of us who are out of shape. The simple formula may have already been brought to the masses by the likes of LMFAO, but it sounds a little sweeter coming from the accented Queen of Queens.
