Watch Carly Rae Jepsen And 5 Other Celebs Fail At Ceremonial First Pitches
When celebrities are asked to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at baseball games, they’re not expected to fire Nolan Ryan-like heaters right down the middle. In all honesty, they’re not even expected to throw strikes. They just need to walk out to the mound, give the crowd a little wave and throw the ball with a trajectory that allows the player crouching behind the plate to actually catch it. Unfortunately for “Call Me Maybe” singer Carly Rae Jepsen, she was not able to accomplish that minimum task, nor did she come anywhere close to doing so.
Sporting a Tampa Bay Rays jersey and working out of the windup, Jepsen looked like she was all business when she reared back, but she held onto the ball for too long, causing her to throw it directly into the ground and add her name to the rather shameful list of all-time embarrassing first pitches. Fortunately for her, she seemed to take the unintentional spike in stride, laughing at herself and waving to the crowd again, which isn’t surprising since she seems like a pretty sweet girl.
Not surprisingly, footage of the incident began racing around the Internet almost immediately after it happened. Fortunately for her, however, this clip definitely won’t have the long-term legs to ever approach her “Call Me Maybe” video in terms of number of views. “Tonight I’m Getting Over You”, though, could be in some real jeopardy.
If history is any indication, this video will be everywhere for a few days, Carly will return to music and an overwhelming majority of people will forget about this horrid fastball, for awhile. Then, a year or two from now, some other poor celebrity will bounce one to the plate and this clip will reemerge along with all the other classic fails in recent baseball memory.
So, in honor of that pattern, here are five recent ceremonial first pitches that didn’t exactly go as planned…
Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory throws it sideways…
Longtime Howard Stern producer Gary “Baba Booey” Dell’Abate hits the umpire…
