Watch How This Kid Recovers From An Instrument Malfunction During The National Anthem

We've seen National Anthem blunders before, and oftentimes, watching a singer fumble through the words can be an uncomfortable ordeal, but in the case of this kid's mishap, it's impossible not to smile. I'll admit, I even got a little emotional by his reaction. Many kids might not know what to do when their instrument malfunctions in the middle of a performance, but Andrew Pawelczyk recovered rather quickly when his cymbal dropped to the floor mid-song, pausing for a moment to consider his options and then turning to salute the flag as The Star-Spangled Banner finished out.

NPR says Andrew is a student at Eisenhower Junior High School in Darien, Illinois. As you can see in the video, he's doing an admiral job clashing his cymbal on time with the band's music, until the strap breaks on one cymbal and it falls to the floor. He pauses for a moment, looking uncertain, sets the other cymbal down, and then - rather than stepping away or standing there awkwardly - he turns to the flag and salutes while the rest of the song plays out. It's a respectful gesture and one a lot of kids might not have had the presence of mind to make in such a situation.

Andrew told CNN that he considered running to get a new pair, but then opted to salute. People have responded positively to the video, which has racked up more than 2 million views on YouTube since going online last month. The video is titled "Star Spangled Banner Fail," but the comments below, and the coverage the video has been getting seem far less focused on the mishap as they are in how Pawelczyk handled the situation. Seems more like a Star Spangled Banner win.
