As you've probalby seen by now over at the main section of the site, I'm in Las Vegas for Cinema Con, the annual convention where movie theater owners and exhibition companies gather to talk shop, but more importantly for me, the studios show up to try to dazzle the people who will be showing their movies this summer. There's presentations, all kinds of stars on hand, advance screening or new footage, and maybe most important of all, a giant bag of swag.
This year's swag bag is especially huge, but tucked in among the usual candy, USB drives and pens was something intriguing-- four mini bottles of POM Wonderful Pomegranate Juice, and a mini bottle each of Mane 'n Tail shampoo and conditioner. Both of these were items featured prominently in Morgan Spurlock's new documentary The Greatest Movie Ever Sold, which he funded entirely through product placement. It's a little hard to explain how the movie works-- you can read my Sundance review for a little more-- but basically it's Spurlock gleefully selling out to corporate America, a theme that's both thumbing a nose at the corporate sponsored reality of Cinema Con and fitting right in.
The movie itself is screening on Wednesday night, and I can't wait to see how it goes over with a crowd that knows product placement better than anyone. Check out the photo of the Morgan Spurlock swag. I for one can't wait to use the Mane 'n Tail.
