Supergirl Season 2: What We Know So Far
In its first season, Supergirl has done a super job of getting and keeping the audience excited and surprised with the adventures of the newly formed superhero. She's made some amazing allies and gotten quite the rogues gallery of villains to fight, and the series shows no sign of slowing down any time soon.
Now that Season 1 is over, it's time to look ahead to what's on tap for Season 2. Will James and Kara continue to do their will-they-won't-they dance? Will she ever see Winn as more than a cool, techy friend? What new villains will show up? Will any old foes get loose? Here's everything we know about Supergirl Season 2.
Is Supergirl Renewed?
After weeks and weeks of waiting, we finally know that Supergirl will be granted another opportunity to keep National City safe, but that won't happen on CBS. In a move that many see as completely fitting, Supergirl will be joining two of her DC Comic cohorts over on The CW, Arrow and The Flash. This is good news for the fans who wanted to continue watching Kara explore her powers and use them to battle the baddies of National City, human, metahuman, man made and alien alike.
The Start Date
The official air date for Supergirl Season 2 is Monday, October 10, which makes sense, because Season 1 started on October 26, 2015. The series' soon-to-be sister shows The Flash and Arrow will also debut in October, on the 4th and 5th, respectively.
The Story
We do know a little of what will be in store for Kara Danvers/Kara Zor-El in the second season of Supergirl. As of Episode 20, "Better Angels," Kara stopped Non and Astra's plan to take over National City (and, later, the world, of course) with the Myriad effect. As Myriad had begun to overload the brains of the people of National City, and those in the DEO, Kara and J'onn battled Non and Indigo near Fort Rozz, and win. But, in order to stop the signal, Supergirl had to risk her own life by flying Fort Rozz into space beyond Earth's atmosphere. Just when she began to lose consciousness, Alex appeared in the ship that brought Kara to Earth and saves her.
So, for now, all of the Fort Rozz baddies are floating aimlessly in space, but that probably won't last for long. Non, last in charge of the Myriad plan with Indigo, collapsed during his fight with Kara, so it's unlikely that he's actually dead. It's entirely possible that Non will pop up again next season, along with other Kryptonians from the alien prison. Since Supergirl never captured Non, he'll probably be looking to get revenge by any means necessary. But, I wouldn't look for a Big Bad like Non to be a serious threat all through Season 2; most superhero shows have seasonal arcs for villains like Non, who threaten the superhero's city for a season and then die or get imprisoned for most of any new seasons.
Now that Supergirl and her allies know about Project Cadmus, the secret genetic engineering lab where the government dissects alien prisoners for the military, expect it to be a big part of Season 2. Hank and Alex are trying to find the location, mainly to retrieve Jeremiah Danvers, but it may not be so easy. And, stopping Cadmus from imprisoning decent aliens who just want to enjoy life on Earth will certainly be no easy feat. According to Supergirl executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, Cadmus in Season 2 will have the lab "remain more of an evil, specter-y thing that's out there," so Hank and Alex might initially fail in their mission to retrieve Jeremiah and never actually find Cadmus at all. This, of course, means that the Supergirl allies will be trying to find that place and stop them for as long as it takes.

Even though Cadmus will remain a mysterious collective of scientists, we do know that the agency will, indeed, be a major threat that Supergirl and friends face in Season 2. Kreisberg says that the group is made up of "true believers" who are looking to completely eradicate alien life on Earth. And that is certainly bad news for good aliens like Kara and J'onn.
Kreisberg has also promised that Season 2 of Supergirl will remind people of Empire Strikes Back in some important ways. Instead of meaning that the show will get dark, he says it means that the stories have "gotten richer, with some of the characters and what they'll be exploring this season," meaning that they were able to "go deeper with the characters and have more introspection, and watch them grow and learn." Sounds good to me.
We've also been told that Season 2 will launch all four of the DC shows on The CW into a massive four-way crossover event, since this season will eventually see the Supergirl world, formerly known as Earth-CBS, finally fully cross over into the same reality as Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. Speaking of The Flash, all you musical fans should prepare yourselves, because later in the season Kara and friends will have a musical crossover with Barry and his pals at S.T.A.R. Labs. Surprising? Sure. Worth waiting for? Absolutely.
Also, let's not forget about that mystery Kryptonian pod just like Kara's that flew through the air near her apartment. Kara was able to get a look inside after it stopped, but we still don't know who she was so shocked to see inside. We know that actor Chris Wood will be playing pod guy, but right now we can only guess that the character might be the Daxamite Mon-El. If that is the character, he's part of an alien race that gets powered up by our sun much like Kryptonians. You can expect his reveal to be a major part of Season 2.
Kara/Supergirl/Kara Zor-El
Kara Zor-El/Kara Danvers/Supergirl has already had a hell of a life. She was sent to Earth as a 13-year-old by her parents, Zor-El and Alura, to watch over her infant cousin, Kal-El as they fled their doomed planet, Krypton. Unfortunately, her ship was knocked off course by the explosion of her planet, and she ended up in stasis in the Phantom Zone for decades. By the time her ship escaped and she made it to Earth, Kal-El was already grown and known as Superman by the people of her new home. Superman was able to find the young teen when she landed on the planet, and place her with friends, Jeremiah and Eliza Danvers, who already had a young daughter, Alex. Kara gets used to hiding her considerable powers from mankind, so as not to make herself a target of threats or the government. By the time she's 24, though, a potential plane crash causes Kara to use her powers for the first time in decades, leading to her becoming National City's new hero, Supergirl.
So, what could be in store for Kara and her high-flying alter-ego for Season 2? Well, as Kara has only recently decided to use her powers to fight baddies big and small, she's still learning to use the considerable talents given to her by Earth's sun. She's new to the hero life, and is still trying to figure out how to make her time as Supergirl fit into her time as Kara Danvers without having either suffer. She'll likely keep working with her sister and the Department of Extra-Normal Operations (D.E.O.) to stop metahumans and alien threats from taking over National City. She'll also probably still be trying to deal with her feelings for James Olson, who's part of her team of supporters and has been the object of her affection for most of Season 1. In the finale, Kara told James that she thinks it's possible that they're not meant to be, and also says that she thinks they missed their chance to be happy together, even though she also admitted that she still cared for him. Moments before the episode ended, James kissed her after presenting Kara with a framed photo he'd taken of her, so there is probably still hope for the couple. Kara will also have a new gig at CatCo Worldwide Media, seeing as how Cat Grant gave her a promotion and is actually letting Kara decide what her new role in the company will be.
Alex Danvers
Sisters, am I right? When Kara shows up at the Danvers house and is taken in by the family, Eliza and Jeremiah already have a daughter, and Alex was none too happy to have to share the limelight with a super powered new sister. But, as time went on, the two became close. Alex, a doctor and scientist, was even given her job at the D.E.O. because of her proximity to Kara, and worked there for years without Kara knowing. When Kara decided to reveal her powers and gets captured by the government organization, Alex's cover is blown and she becomes the one who helps her adjust to working with them, as well as teaching Kara how to fight bad guys without always relying solely on her powers. As Kara's only family member with good connections to the government, Alex serves as an important ally for her sister. She's got the skills to help Kara defeat villains, but, also, because she's family, can also go to bat for her when things get tough, whether that's at the D.E.O. or in their personal lives.
When we last saw Alex, she and Kara were in a very good place after she rescued Kara from space when she flew Fort Rozz away from Earth. She and Hank had also recently discovered that Alex and Kara's presumed dead father, Jeremiah, has actually been alive for several years and is held at Cadmus. While they haven't been able to locate Jeremiah, or the secret government facility, there will certainly be additional attempts to find both in Supergirl Season 2.
Considering how important to Kara's life and her development as Supergirl Alex is, she will likely continue to play a big part in her sister's life in Season 2 as Kara continues to get used to the hero life and what it means to work with the government to save the city, and in some cases the country, on a regular basis.
James Olsen
The former Daily Planet photographer has quickly become a confidant of Kara's and someone who encourages her new role as Supergirl. James moved to National City from Metropolis as a personal favor to Clark Kent, a friend and former co-worker. Clark knows what it's like to try coming into your own when you have very few people to confide in and you're hiding as big a secret as Kara is, so he wanted James to look after Kara, and he obliged. James was also looking for a change, so he wouldn't just be known as Superman's buddy, and he also wanted a change of scenery after breaking up with Lucy Lane. James works with Kara at Catco as the new art director.
James has been the object of Kara's affections for the bulk of Season 1. And, while he mostly saw her as a friend and someone he was charged to keep an eye on, his romantic-ish feelings for Kara were fully revealed in the finale, when he seeks Kara out to discuss the kiss she planted on him in Episode 18, "World's Finest," and then lays his own kiss on Kara. It was also obvious in that episode that James is jealous when The Flash shows up from an alternate universe and gives Kara another superhero to work with and confide in. Hopefully, Season 2 would see us getting more of a romantic relationship between James and Kara. That is, after everyone deals with the mystery passenger of the Kryptonian pod.
Winslow "Winn" Schott, Jr.
Winn is also a co-worker of Kara's, who serves as a tech expert at CatCo. As Kara's best friend, he also happens to be on her squad of allies, helped her develop her Supergirl costume and does what he can to assist in her fight against evil-doers. Winn has an unreciprocated crush on Kara and serves as a rival for her affections with James, whom Kara has feelings for. He's tried to tell Kara about his feelings or simply ask her out many times, but has never been successful. But, he did kiss her during Episode 10, "Childish Things," but Winn ran off soon after, leaving Kara to feel guilty for not recognizing how he felt about her.
Before finding out that Kara was a super-powered alien, Winn believed that the Earth was populated by aliens other than Superman and kept a website detailing supposed alien sightings. While Winn is a definite good guy, he has ties to two bad guys that Supergirl has had to fight and take down. Winn's father is a villain known as the Toyman, a man who's known for using children's toys to destroy lives, mostly with bombs planted inside of them. He went to prison when Winn was young, but escaped and bombed the National City Toy Con. Supergirl saved everyone at the convention, and managed to send Toyman back to prison.
Winn, in an effort to give up pining for Kara, began dating her rival assistant to Cat Grant at CatCo, Siobhan Smythe. When Kara finds out that Siobhan is planning to give information on Supergirl to the Daily Planet, she tells Cat, who then fires Siobhan and convinces Perry White not to rehire her. After her apparent blackballing from the media industry in National City, she vows revenge on Kara. A family curse soon helps turn Siobhan into the Silver Banshee, and, after a long fight where she teams with Livewire against Supergirl and The Flash, is finally arrested. Hopefully, Season 2 will see Winn continue to live a good life outside of his father's evil shadow, and have him choosing better girlfriends, even if he can't have Kara.
One thing that will definitely be changing for Winn in Season 2 is his job. We found out a few days ago that Winn will actually, for some reason, get canned from Cat Co. and end up going to work for the D.E.O. If you think about it, this is really the best place for him to work. He's willing to face down danger and has the mind to work with the highly technical and secretive projects that they face at the D.E.O.; Winn is made for a job there, probably more so than he was at Cat Co.
Hank Henshaw/Martian Manhunter/J'onn J'onzz
Hank is the head of the D.E.O. who decides to bring Supergirl in when she reveals herself to the world, concerned that her superpowers pose a threat to humans. In Episode 7, "Human for a Day," Hank is actually shown to be a benevolent alien himself, named J'onn J'onzz. He tells Alex that the real Hank tried to kill him years ago, and that her father saved him. To repay the debt, J'onn agrees to watch over Alex and Kara, which was another reason for Alex's recruitment by the D.E.O. When Hank is interrogated by the D.E.O. in Episode 17, "Manhunter," he finally tells the whole story of how he took over as Hank Henshaw, noting that he only stole Hank's identity after Jeremiah threw him off a cliff during their fight.
Hank went on a mission with Alex to find Cadmus and, in the process, locate the long-believed-dead Jeremiah Danvers in Season 1, so the next season might see him continue to locate the shadowy government lab. Hank had also been relieved of his duties as the head of the D.E.O., with Lucy Lane taking his place. General Lane revealed in the finale that the President finally pardoned Hank and put him back in control of the D.E.O., so it would be interesting to see if he decides to use his full powers as a superhero who can more openly help Supergirl with threats to humanity in Season 2.
We do know for a fact that Hank will be getting a larger part in the second season of Supergirl. It was revealed this summer that after about 300 years on Earth, he will finally have another Martian around who can share his emotions about his former home world. The series will introduce the, usually heroic Miss Martian (also known as M'gann M'orzz) to the show. This was largely done "to give J'onn his own story this year and his own emotional ride, meeting her and having this tie to his home world that he thought he would never have again," says Kreisberg.
Cat Grant
Cat is the founder of CatCo Worldwide Media and Kara's boss. She started off as the assistant to Perry White at the Daily Planet, moving her way up to gossip columnist, where she began a rivalry with Lois Lane. She was able to save jobs at a newspaper she owns, the Tribune, when Kara first reveals herself and stops an airplane crash. Cat is the one who dubs her Supergirl and, as such, feels she has a certain exclusive right to cover her exploits. While Cat was originally dismissive of Kara, she soon becomes a mentor to her, instructing her on how to succeed in a man's world.
You can bet that Cat will continue to be shallow and superficial in Season 2 of Supergirl. Cat managed to put together that Kara and Supergirl were the same person by Episode 8, "Hostile Takeover," but was tricked by a shape-shifted J'onn into thinking that she was wrong. So, for Season 2, the question remains as to whether or not Kara will allow Cat to know about her superhero side, or if she'll continue to feel the need to hide it from her.
When word came down that Supergirl Season 2 would be happening on The CW instead of CBS, a move that included production of the show moving from Los Angeles to Vancouver, it was suddenly unclear how much Cat Grant we would get in the new season. Calista Flockhart, who plays Cat, has roots firmly planted in L.A., and wasn't keen to completely uproot her life for the show. But, producers have made it clear that they're on board with fitting her in however they can. And, this might mean that Cat will be stuck in the office permanently for her scenes, since this would make it much easier for the production to film a lot of Flockhart's scenes within a few days, allowing her to get back home before too long. As the situation currently stands, it looks like we're going to be seeing a whole lot less of Cat Grant in Season 2, as Flockhart will now be billed as a "recurring guest star," which means she'll have a more limited role.
Superman
That's right, folks. After several fake-outs in Season 1, Supergirl will finally introduce us to its version of the Man of Steel, as played by actor Tyler Hoechlin. The show felt it was the right time to bring in Superman because, as Andrew Kreisberg put it, Kara managed to save the day last year, so it didn't feel like they were bringing Superman in to get her out of a jam. We'll be treated to at least the first two episodes of the season having a strong Clark/Superman presence, and i'm sure that will be a big treat for DC fans.
We also know that while Kara adores her cousin, she does experience some jealousy where he's concerned. He's been a hero for a lot longer than she, and people, reasonably, stop what they're doing when he's around to admire the brave alien who's conquered many foes in the name of Earth. While Kara admires him, she also wishes people wouldn't put him on such a pedestal.
Kara will be glad to have Clark around, but her sister Alex won't be quite so glad of it. It turns out that Alex has a bit of a chip on her shoulder about him leaving Kara with the Danvers family and forcing them to deal with raising a powerful alien. Alex is especially miffed that she's been the one there helping Kara through her first year of herodom, and then Clark shows up and Kara's so excited to seem. In short Alex is going to feel a little taken for granted when Clark turns up in National City.
You can get your first look at what will have the two teaming up below.
New Characters
Adding to the excitement over the new season, we will be getting a host of new characters on the series. In addition to Miss Martian, we'll also be treated to the President of the United States as played by Lynda Carter. With plenty of people feeling like aliens shouldn't be allowed to stay on Earth, her presidential stand for inclusion will put her in harm's way and lead to the need for Supergirl's protection.
We will also be treated to Lena Luthor, Lex Luthor's sister. The character will be featured in a recurring capacity on the show, and she'll be trying to salvage the good name of the family company after Lex went and got himself thrown in prison. Lena will be running Luthor Corp. and trying to distance herself, and the company, from Lex. Kara will actually get to know Lena, and spend a lot of time trying to figure out if she's a good guy, or just another devious Luthor.
Other known additions to the cast include National City police detective Maggie Sawyer, who will work with Supergirl since she has a special interest in cases involving alien threats; and journalist Snapper Carr, who will be hired by Cat Grant as the Editor-in-Chief at Cat Co. and push Kara in ways that lead to her maturing. There are a couple of characters that could be included at some point in Season 2, as well. It's possible that we could see Batwoman, AKA Kate Kane, seeing as how, in the comics, she has a relationship with Maggie Sawyer; and we might also see Oracle, AKA former Batgirl Barbara Gordon, who's taken up a life of computer hacking in order to aid heroes all over the world since an injury that left her in a wheelchair.
Villains
Astra, Non, Indigo, Red Tornado, Toyman, Livewire, Bizarro, Reactron...the list of villains that Supergirl has faced in her first few months of being a superhero is long and varied, but she's worked very hard to take care of as many of her rogue's gallery as possible. So, what will Season 2 hold for the villains of National City? Maxwell Lord is still out there, hiding behind his money and power, and he knows who Kara is and has already tried to have her killed. It's unlikely that he'll be dealt with soon, and we can probably expect to see him cause trouble for quite some time yet.
Astra has, surprisingly, been dealt with. Alex killed her in Episode 13, "For the Girl Who Has Everything," before she could kill Hank. But, Non and the rest of the Fort Rozz prisoners that hadn't already been dealt with in Season 1, are currently floating around in space. Even if he and his fellow convicts decide to go forth and try to take over some other unsuspecting planet, seeing as how Supergirl stopped his Myriad plan, he'll probably want to regroup and try hitting Supergirl again sometime in Season 2.
A big time Superman villain who might be showing up this season is Lex Luthor. We know that Lena Luthor will be on the show in a recurring capacity, and with one Luthor there's always the possibility of another. While there's no word yet on whether or not Lex will officially show up, it would be pretty easy to fit him into the action. At this point in time, Lex is actually in prison, and it wouldn't be impossible for Lena to go visit him.
Another popular DC villain, Roulette, is rumored to have a part in Season 2 of Supergirl. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. actress Dichen Lachman was spotted on set wearing a sexy red dress with a thigh high slit that showed off a snake tattoo, which is the classic look for Roulette. If this character is included it would mark a change in the villains of Supergirl, as the character has no superpowers, but simply excels at calculating odds for the sake of high stakes gambling.
Aside from those possibilities, we don't know a lot about the villains that the new season of Supergirl will have in store for us, with one exception, that is. We know for sure that the classic Superman villain Metallo will pop up in the first episode of Season 2. Actor Frederick Schmidt will first play the bad guy in his civilian form as assassin John Corben. After an encounter with Superman and Supergirl, the character will be seriously injured and will be taken in and fixed up by a mysterious organization. His life saving procedures will change his physiology, leading to him becoming Metallo, a villain who is powered by Kryptonite. We also know that Metallo will be around for at least two episodes this season.
Well, that's everything we know so far about Supergirl Season 2. We'll keep you up to date on any more information as it arises. You can catch the first episode of Season 2 on The CW on October 10.
