Watch Stephen Colbert Explain How He Realized He Would Marry His Wife
Stephen Colbert does a very lovable thing right before each episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert tapes. Before a taping, he takes to the stage and takes questions from the audience. Many of these questions are random, but occasionally a question will lead to a meaningful story, such as the time Stephen Colbert fell in love with Evelyn McGee, who is now Evelyn McGee-Colbert, his wife. You can check out the multi-faceted but sweet story, below.
Colbert recounts the time that he was dating another girl, who stated she wanted to either get married or break up. (They had been dating for a few years.) Stephen Colbert, who was much younger at the time, decided to go home for a week and take some time to think about whether or not he was interested in getting married. His mother picked him up, talked some sense into him, basically saying if he didn't know if he wanted to get married he shouldn't get married, and then Colbert realized he had an entire week to do whatever he wanted.
He ended up attending a play while at home and saw his future wife from a balcony and thought:
They ended up talking for more than two hours after the play at an after party, determining that they actually sort-of knew one another, had grown up in the same town and had mutual acquaintances. At one point, Colbert was even worried that she was just being polite in order to humor him and turned around to give her space to walk away should she want to walk away. She didn't and now they are married.
Jimmy Fallon does this sort of storytelling all the time during actual episodes of The Tonight Show, but this little pre-show instance has showed me that Stephen Colbert is also a witty and animated storyteller. If this is something he could bring into his CBS series more often, I'm all for it. Sure, he goes off on a tangent about the Odyssey briefly, an aside that probably goes over the heads of a good chunk of the viewers who caught the video, but everyone should get the sentiment: Stephen Colbert met his wife by chance, but it was one of the greatest moments of his life. They've been married since 1993.
New episodes of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert air on weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET, only on CBS. To find out what else is on this summer, check out our TV premiere schedule.
